After a number of hit songs in Bollywood, like Moh Moh Ke Dhaage (Dum Laga Ke Haisha), Chal (October) and more, Monali Thakur is dropping her debut non-film single today. Titled Tamanna, the singer tells us that it’s a happy dance number in the American Deep House genre. “There’s no intense thought to the song but I’m just sharing with the world how I like to be in life. I love dancing and for me, the good life is being able to lead a happy one. When I’m upset, I go and dance my heart out till my feet give up. That’s what I am saying through the song,” she coos.

FIRST SINGLE

Monali has worked on singles before but they didn’t see the light of the day for some reason or the other. “I think everything has its own time,” she says. But, now, she will work on more non-film music. “It’s a blessing that we now have the digital platform to own our stuff and release it independently. So, I want to regularly release singles for my audiences,” informs Monali, adding that she is already working on the next one, which will be a departure from her glamorous debut. “That one will be more real,” she says about the song that will be shot towards the end of May.

INDIE INDUSTRY

The singer emphasises the need for a music industry beyond films, like in the West. “The ecosystem here is weird and there is no growth of independent music. If we support more non-film artistes, we can also have another industry,” she says. “However, changes are happening slowly. I’m excited about that future and that’s why I’m working on non-film music, too,” Monali avers. She also looks forward to releasing an album this year. “I’m not allowed to reveal the name. We’ve put in a lot of hard work in it,” she says. On film’s front, she reveals, “After Moh Moh Ke Dhaage, I’ve sung for Anu Malik once again and can’t wait for the track to be out. There are songs with Tanishk Bagchi and Meet Brothers. This year, I’m working with a lot of people whom I haven’t worked with before.”

JUDGING REALITY SHOWS

Monali has been a judge on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs (fifth season) and Rising Star, but she is wary about being called a judge. “Who is anyone to judge someone? I’m here to help contestants with my experience,” she says. She also reminisces her days of struggle after Indian Idol 2. “It has made me respect my life and whatever I’m getting or not getting. If you get something easily, it’s taken away just as easily, too. Struggles make your foundation stronger,” she signs off.
