There was a time when Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit-Nene both ruled the roost. Both the Bollywood divas were known for their exceptional dancing skills as well. Back then, song and dance was just another usual routine for their films.

Now, it’s become a genre of its own. There’s ABCD, ABCD 2, Munna Michael and Remo D’Souza’s next with Salman Khan — which are dance-oriented films.

Madhuri did it

After a hiatus when Madhuri Dixit-Nene made her comeback, she chose a dance drama like Aaja Nachle. Even her last release, Dedh Ishqiya, had her performing to two Indian classical numbers. On the other hand, Sridevi just had a two-minute dance sequence in English Vinglish’s Navrai Majhi song. In Mom, a hard-hitting revenge drama, there was no scope for dance. Fans have been waiting to see a glimpse of Sridevi dancing on screen but the actress is averse to the idea.

She says, “I don’t want to do a dance film. I know it’s an exceptional space now and they are working as well. But I don’t think I will try it anymore. Dance karne ke liye bachche hain na (laughs). Why should I get up and start dancing? Woh toh kar liya, dance ho gaya! People appreciated but now, I have move on from that.”

Comic appeal

Sridevi has other plans, “I would like to do a comedy. Or something as challenging and dramatic like Mom again.” Ask her why and she quips, “I would rather take up a role which suits me, a role which I will be proud of, something that my children and my family would feel good about.”
