The days preceding the release of his single is a stressful time for Gajendra Verma. But he prefers to not lose sleep over it. “I take my mind off and travel,” says the Indipop artiste, who just dropped a non-film track, Yaad Karke. It’s just been about a week since it came out and the track has garnered over seven million views on YouTube. Gajendra says, “It crossed two million in just two days. I hope it continues to do this well.”

BIGGEST HIT

Gajendra has been in the industry since 2008 when he released the single, Tune Mere Jaana (Emptiness). However, back then, YouTube wasn’t even considered a platform to showcase talent, forget being a career option.

But the avenue gave him time to work on himself and the kind of music that he believed in. “It took me about four years of doing independent music to create a fan base that used to wait for me to release singles,” he recalls. The turning point in his decade-long career came with his biggest hit, Tera Ghata, in 2018. He admits that fans compare every song to the famed number. “A hit song tends to overshadow your other releases. A lot of people tell me that Tera Ghata is my best song, or that the earlier songs were better. But as an artiste, I want to try fresh things and make new music. I can make another Tera Ghata but I won’t because it will be a disrespect to the song,” the singer reasons.

‘I’D LIKE TO SING NEHA’S MANALI TRANCE’

Songstress Neha Kakkar’s cover version of the track became popular, too. What did Gajendra think about it? “It was a different take on the number. I like how she has rendered it and love her version as a whole,” he states. If he had to revisit one of her tracks, “It would be Manali Trance,” says he.

ALWAYS A POP ARTISTE

So far, Gajendra has also sung Bollywood numbers, such as Baarish in Yaariyan (2017), The Mercury Song (Mercury, 2018) and so on. But he relates to non-film music more. “I’m a pop and non-Bollywood musician. I definitely identify myself as an indie artiste,” he asserts. Currently, he is working on the post-production of his new track. Tera Ghata and Yaad Karke were both heartbreak songs and Khelegi Kya? was about wooing a girl. The new one is a romantic outing. As a parting shot, he tells us that as an independent artiste, he is relishing the freedom to work as well as travel whenever he pleases.

“I make songs that I want to make. I’m really proud of the fact that I can take my career in the direction that I want to,” he concludes.
