Deepika Padukone's visit to Jawaharlal Nehru University just a few days before the release of Chhapaak received strong reactions by people across the country. Many lauded the actor for expressing her solidarity and taking a stand, while there were many who trolled her left, right and centre. They even asked for a boycott of Chhapaak and it trended on social media for a long period of time. However, many even started the trend 'I Support Deepika' on Twitter.

Now, Chhapaak director Meghna Gulzar has broken her silence on Deepika visiting JNU. She told PTI, "We have to be able to separate between the personal and professional. What somebody does in their personal life and what they have done as a professional in a film needs to be looked at separately."

Meghna went on to say, "While they are trying to separate the lens of personal and professional if one can slightly divert the lens back to the reason why we made the film and what we are trying to talk about and bring to light... I think it is important."

Talking about the distribution of Chhapaak as the film released alongside Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Meghna went on to say, "This is a distribution decision that was taken by the film’s distributor and I think they believed that both films are very different and will find their audience. I think that also came from a place of faith in the film."

She concluded by saying, "Considering how populated our film release calendar is, it is extremely difficult to find a solo release."
