In the classic days of Bollywood, the grandparents’ role would be restricted to either bestowing blessings on their grandchildren, or be the ultimate obstacle in their pota or poti’s love life. But the tides have turned. While Paa’s granny, played by Arundhati Nag, is playfully called ‘Bum’ by her grandson Auro, in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Anjali’s grandmother, played by Farida Jalal, is always willing to gang up with her to make her son’s (Shah Rukh Khan) life more fun. Well, it might be National Grandparents Day in the US and UK, but we take that as an excuse to revisit some of the quirkiest dadis, dadus and bijis that we have seen on the big screen in recent times.

Rishi Kapoor in Kapoor and Sons

Here’s a dadu, who makes faces at the nurse in the hospital, asks his grandsons (played by Sidharth Malhotra and Fawad Khan) to sneak in cigarettes for him, and wants to watch ‘rangeen filmein’ on Fawad’s ‘I-papad’ (iPad). His infatuation for Mandakini, especially in the waterfall scene in Ram Teri Ganga Maili, is enough for his grandsons to get a life-size cutout of the actress made for his 90th birthday. Rishi Kapoor was delightful in the role, which he reportedly offered to quit twice as he didn’t agree with director Shakun Batra’s style of filmmaking.

Tripta Lakhanpal in Queen

Kangana Ranaut is dumped two days before her wedding in Queen. But instead of calling her unlucky, as one would expect from the typical grandmas, her dadi calmly starts telling Kangana a story. She tells her about the time she was dumped by her lover and how one day, she too would be thankful that this happened.

Kamlesh Gill in Vicky Donor

Drinking with buddies is passé. In Vicky Donor, Kamlesh Gill, who plays Ayushmann Khurrana’s biji, has her daughter-in-law for a drinking pal. She teases her about the dowry, which was not as much as she hoped it would have been, abuses under her breath, threatens to cut off the neighbour’s water pipeline and when she gets to know that the girl her grandson is in love with is a divorcee, laughs and tells her that her former husband’s loss is her grandson’s gain.

Kamlesh Gill in Bang Bang

One of B-Town’s coolest dadis, Kamlesh Gill once again took the cake with her act as the adorable grandmother, who has no qualms watching her granddaughter (played by Katrina Kaif) take a shower while she cooly sits on the pot.

Salima Raza in Phillauri

It’s just nine in the morning and the dadi of the family has already started drinking. That’s Salima Raza in Phillauri as Biji. The whiskey-guzzling grandmother has no qualms about discussing her bedroom antics in front of her son and is always up for a drink. Hic!

Surekha Sikri in Sniff!!!

Surekha Sikri is Bebe to Sunny played by Khushmeet Gill, who is nasally challenged. The grandmother never gives up encouraging her little grandson to smell the various scents that surround them. Since pickle-making is the business of the family, she often laments the lack of Sunny’s ability to smell. Not one to give up easily, she takes him to every specialist possible. The tide turns when he develops a keen sense of smell and becomes a detective who helps solve crimes. She proudly stands next to him and flaunts his new found ability.
