Govinda, whose latest film Rangeela Raja, is caught in the tussle between producer-director Pahlaj Nihalani and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), feels that a section of people in the industry and outside is working against him. At the press conference where the filmmaker and the actor showed the 20-odd scenes that the CBFC asked to be altered for the U/A rating, the latter stated that for the past nine years, his movies are being targetted.

Govinda stated, “I’ve been doing my work with sincerity, but vested interests are not letting my movies reach the audiences. Due to some reason, some or the other film of mine is being stopped from making it to the theatres. My last release, FryDay, wasn’t given proper screens and show timings; and its makers were told that a Govinda movie isn’t good enough to draw that many footfalls. I wonder on what basis can they say that. Audiences are the best judge, so give the film proper screens and show-timings and let the people decide. The film got favourable reviews and my performance was also appreciated, but fewer screens and poor-show timings did it in.”

Elaborating on how he was being persecuted for the past several years, the actor added, “A family entertainer like Sandwich, which my industry friends and stars like Aamir Khan and  Salman Khan felt was a sure hit when they watched it, asked me why it wasn’t releasing. I didn’t have a reply because I didn’t know. As a child, I was taught that sometimes things happen depending on your fate, but you should work hard and move on. Then so many of my movies didn’t release. One of my movies with the late Ravi Chopra is said to have got stuck in legal issues. If not that, there was some problem between financiers and producers. After Bhagam Bhag with the production house, my second film with them got stuck. But the same production house’s another film with Rohit Shetty made it to the cinemas smoothly. A number of my movies didn’t see the light of day.”

Maintaining that he has nothing to do with politics or playing games with anyone in the industry, he says that he’s compelled to think there is a problem. “There are some people in the industry who are not providing me with a platform to act. I am sorry to say this, but there is God, and he will never do wrong to anyone, including me. But there definitely is some conspiracy behind not letting me work and showcase my work, for sure. But I will not give up. I will continue working hard,” he said.

Coming back to the Censor hurdle faced by his upcoming release Rangeela Raja, Govinda sums it up, “Since this is now happening with Pahlajji who gave me a break, I had to say all these things. I would never hurt anyone with what I say or do. I have only one request to all, please provide me with a platform. Let me showcase my work. I know the audience wants me. If things continue like this, I don’t know what I can do.”
