Known for creating family dramas like none other, Karan Johar experimented with various genres in 2019. He first worked around a film based in another era through Kalank and later experimented with the horror genre by directing Ghost Stories.

Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, and Anurag Kashyap worked on 'Ghost Stories' in collaboration with Karan Johar. The genre was fresh for all the directors, but Karan Johar mentioned it was the first and last time he would direct a horror movie. He said so in an interview with Mumbai Mirror.

Ask Karan Johar how much did he connect to Ghost Stories and he said, "Horror and I don’t connect at all, and very honestly, they’ll not happen again. This is my first and only horror story that I’ve made for Netflix. It’s not a genre that I enjoy watching, so why should I enjoy making it?"

Further stating that the movie was challenging, Karan added, "I felt like this gives me the ability to be out of my comfort zone and tell a story being uncomfortable. I think every filmmaker should be, at one point, uncomfortable to tell a story because that challenges their core directorial spirit. So, making this horror anthology has been the most challenging schedule in my 21-year-long journey."
