He has played a rockstar from the suburbs in 'Rock On' and its sequel in the past, but now Farhan Akhtar is Qaidi no 1821 who forms a band in the Lucknow Jail.

The first look of 'Lucknow Central' is out which shows Farhan Akhtar in the role of a small time struggling singer who gets caught for a crime he hasn't committed. Wrongly charged for a murder, his character Kishan Mohan Girhotra is sent to Lucknow Central jail. And to break out from the hell, the singer decides to forms a band of prisoners, not to create music but as the escape route from the jail.

Not just Farhan Akhtar's trasformation to a small time singer is commendable, the film also boasts of a stellar supporting cast as well. Ronit Roy as the jailor, Manoj Tewari in the role of a pompous singer, Ravi Kissan as a politician, Deepak Dobriyal as Farhan Akhtar's band member and Diana Penty in the role of NGO worker who helps the band of prisoners.

Directed by Ranjit Tiwari, Lucknow Central is up for release on September 15. And within few hours of its release, Bollywood celebrities have given a thumbs up to Farhan Akhtar-Diana Penty's jail drama.

Films set in jail seems to be the current hot topic in Bollywood. Another film on similar lines was announced by YRF recently. The lannch pad of Anya Singh and Ranbir Kapoor's cousin Aadar Jain is called Qaidi Band which is apparantly inspired by the period of emergency and women rights.
