Fanney Khan, starring Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rajkummar Rao, is supposed to be a sickly sweet movie about a plus-sized girl with a plus-sized dream and her father’s desire to make it come true for her. No one anticipated that this movie, of all movies, would be the cause of a political dispute. And yet, here we are.

The single ‘Achche Din’ from the movie’s soundtrack became embroiled in political controversy when many people started using the song’s ‘mere achche din kab aayenge’ to target and tease the Narendra Modi and BJP government. The lyric plays on PM Modi’s most popular campaign line prior to his election in 2014, ‘Achche din ab aayenge’. The makers of the film have now released a new version of the song, ‘Mere Achche Din Ab Aaye Re’.

A source close to the makers told Mid-Day “After the first version came out, a lot of people online used it to attack the Central Government and question Modi on his promise of achche din. The song was getting politicised needlessly. The producers also got a few calls from high places, after which they decided to release the new version. They are even contemplating pulling down the original song."

According to the film’s director Atul Manjrekar, the new version wasn’t supposed to be unveiled till the film was released, saying, "We cut a new video and released it now because our song was unnecessarily taking a political colour. It didn't strike us that this is also the slogan of the government. We didn't expect such a reaction. Fanney Khan is a simple film about a cab driver and his dreams. I hope people see the song in the right context and not misconstrue it."

While the original song is about Fanney Khan, Anil Kapoor’s character, wondering when he’ll get paid for his dues and his luck will finally turn around, the new version focuses on the period of bliss that comes when Khan’s life becomes much happier and his daughter is gaining more success.
