Nawazuddin Siddiqui's realistic on-screen portrayals of the underdog have brought him both national and international recognition. All eyes will now be on him when he essays the title role in the under-production Bal Thackeray bio-pic to see how he pulls off the radical Hindu, Marathi, ethnocentric, political nuances of the character.
Insiders in the know are already raving about how convincingly Siddiqui has pulled off the late Thackeray's look, mannerisms and style which will be made public on December 21 in a star-studded first-look event in Mumbai where Big B (Amitabh Bachchan) will be present.
When contacted, Siddiqui refused to comment on this casting coup and told DNA to wait for the official announcement.
Rajyasabha MP and Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut who has scripted the story also laughed when DNA specifically asked about Siddiqui being cast as Thackeray. “Come to the first-look launch and all will be revealed,” he said.
Raut who has been working on the project for over four years said he was inspired by Richard Attenborough's Gandhi and Justin Chadwick's Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. “As someone who spent a lot of time with Balasaheb I know there is so much in his life that lends itself to the big screen,” he said insisting that his film was not a docu-feature. “Balasaheb was a mass leader and I want this to be a mainstream popular film which will strike a chord with all those who know about him and his struggle.”
While underlining how he has taken care to include lesser-known episodes from Thackeray's life and times, he denied he was under any pressure to keep it hagiographical. “I've tried to be as true to the subject as cinematically possible without any interference from anyone, including the Thackeray family,” he informed.
