Super-charged after the success of her Kareena Kapoor Khan-Sonam K Ahuja-starrer Veere Di Wedding, Ekta Kapoor has yet again switched gears for her next production, Laila Majnu. The classic love story is now being retold with a renewed passion.

Ekta, as everyone knows, has always been the torchbearer of change. Eight years ago, when Hindi films were predominantly leaning towards romantic tales, her LSD: Love, Sex Aur Dhokha brazenly addressed the subject of sex, which was a big taboo back then. At that point, her company seemed to ask, ‘Everyone is talking about love, why are we afraid to talk about sex?’

When films focussed on heartfelt love stories and the concept of friendship, family drama and intense feelings, LSD broke norms. Ekta made it clear that there are other factors in life, too, which need to be acknowledged and spoken about openly instead of just stereotyping them.

LSD turned out to be a revolution with filmmakers and actors addressing the taboo topic and not just limiting themselves to the subject of love. In other words, Ekta has always managed to open doors to conversations that were usually had behind closed doors. Now, she seems to have turned the wheel again. In 2018, when most people are sold on casual dating and hook-ups, the TV czarina has come back with an intense love story, albeit with a new twist. She, along with celebrated filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, is backing Laila Majnu, which is helmed by Sajid Ali. Written by the Rockstar director, it stars Avinash Tiwary and Tripti Dimri.

Produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and Preety Ali’s Pi films, the movie releases on September 7. The trailer of Laila Majnu releases today.
