Recently, Varun Dhawan spent close to 10 hours cycling in the scorching heat of Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, with Anushka Sharma riding pillion for the shoot of Sui Dhaaga — Made in India. As the movie is set in the hinterland, the makers wanted to give it a realistic appeal. So, they decided to opt for a bicycle, which is a common mode of transport in the interiors of the country. “From the characters’ looks to the costumes and elements, everything is relatable. This is extremely important for the makers as they draw to pull the audience into the film’s world,” says a source.

To top it off, Varun had recently injured himself while shooting for a scene that needed him to tumble down a flight of stairs. Though the film’s team wanted to use a body double, the actor was keen to do the scene himself.

Unfortunately, during the shot, one of the steps gave way, which led to Varun injuring his shoulder. He resumed the shoot after a few hours. Though pedalling around would have been an easier task in winters, the change in weather conditions made the job rather difficult for the actors, especially since they had to shoot for the entire day. “People in the heartland use bicycles to commute. Varun and Anushka shot for over 10 hours on it in Chanderi. It’s already summer there and the Sun was beating down on them. By the end of the day, both were quite exhausted,” the source reveals.

The Sharat Kataria directorial is inspired by the Make In India campaign. Varun plays Mauji (a tailor), while Anushka will be seen as Mamta, an embroiderer in the film.
