From 'Dolly Ki Doli to 'Ocean's 8', cinema goes crazy about con women

With Hollywood’s Ocean’ s 8 on the cards, we look at B-Town ladies, who have pulled off heists with ease

Ever since the poster of Ocean’s 8 released, everyone is excited to see a gang of women get together to pull off con jobs. It not only brings together a bouquet of stars, but this time, the movie franchise also boasts of a female core cast. The roster of Ocean’s 8 features big names including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Rihanna. 

In this instalment, Debbie (Bullock), who will be seen as the estranged sister of Danny Ocean (played by George Clooney), attempts to pull off a heist of the century at New York City’s star-studded annual Met Gala. Celebrities such as  Anna Wintour, Kim Kardashian West, Maria Sharapova, Kendall Jenner, Katie Holmes, Olivia Munn, Serena Williams and Kylie Jenner will make cameo appearances in the movie that is slated to release on June 8, 2018. 

Bollywood is yet to have a desi version of Ocean’s 8 but in the past, there have been films with con women in the lead. After Hrs takes a look at such actors who’ve won our hearts...

Sonam Kapoor in Dolly Ki Doli (2015)

In this movie, the fashionista played Dolly, who marries many men only to abscond with their wealth on their wedding night, earning her the title of a ‘looteri dulhan’. Her identity is unmasked and revealed to the world by a policeman (Pulkit Samrat). When Dolly and her buddies try to con a prince, they are nabbed by the cop. 

Dolly rekindles her romance with the cop, and marries him only to run away again, regroup with her gang and get on the prowl to look for their next victim.

Parineeti Chopra in Daawat-e-Ishq (2014)

The chirpy Parineeti plays a lower middle class shoe sales girl in Hyderabad who dreams of going to America. He father wants to get her married but only comes across dowry hungry grooms. Gullu (Parineeti) falls in love with a guy but is unable to marry him as his parents demand a hefty dowry. Furious, Gully plans to dowry trap a guy and manages to con him. Later, she feels guilty and returns his money, confessing her love for him and the two 
marry.

Madhuri Dixit-Nene in Dedh Ishqiya (2014)

Here, the beautiful ladies Begum Para (Madhuri Dixit-Nene) and her maid Muniya (Huma Qureshi) pull the wool over the uncle-nephew duo of the Ishqiya series —Khaalujaan (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban (Arshad Warsi), who try to fool the ladies but become victims themselves. After pulling off a heist, the two con men separate. Khaalujaan hides his true identity, recites Urdu poems to Begum in a bid to impress and marry her. Babban, on the other hand, falls for Muniya. The movie has plenty of twists and turns, in the end, leaving the men duped by the women.

Huma Qureshi in Dedh Ishqiya (2014)

Huma, who played Muniya, is more than a friend to Begum Para (Madhuri). The two ladies navigate the various twists and turns with each other’s help. While the viewers may think that these two ladies have fallen in love with the men, they never lose sight of their goal.
