A division bench of the Gujarat High Court has issued notices to the state, the Central Board of Film Certification (Censor Board), and the production house (Salman Khan Films Production) in connection with a PIL that challenged the name of the movie ‘Lover Ratri’ on the grounds that it hurt sentiments of the Hindus.

The court also orally asked the council for Salman Khan Productions to see if it was possible to explore the possibility of change in name of the movie. Further hearing in the case will be held on September 27. The counsel for the production house, Salil Thakor,  on Tuesday also produced the certificate granted by the Censor Board for the trailer of the movie. The court had on Monday sought to know if the trailer had the requisite certification. The producers had later changed the name of the movie to LoveYatri

The counsel argued said that the trailers had also been cleared by the Censor Board and the name of the movie was as per the guidelines for titles.

BB Agarwal, counsel for the Sanatan Foundation, the petitioner, said that despite the change in the name of the movie to LoveYatri, it had the tagline a journey of love.

“The promos hurt the sentiments of the Hindus because it depicts that Garba is all about love when in fact the nine nights of Garba is all about devotion to Goddess Durga,” said Agarwal. He said it was nothing but a blatant attempt to encash on Navratri.

Salil Thakore, the counsel for Salman Khan productions, cited an SC order which said that film certifications and clearances were best left to experts and that test for such cases was that oversensitive sentiment are not to be protected.

He also clarified that the movie was about love blossoming between two young people when the heroine comes down to India to celebrate Navratri.

“The intention is not to hurt anyone’s sentiments. The trailer is not to run down the festival and nowhere does it promote or say anything about licentious behaviour,” said Thakor.
