A number of Bollywood actors are already championing causes to conserve the environment, and now, they are taking the commitment to the next level. While Aamir Khan is doing a lot of work for water conservation through his NGO Paani, Akshay Kumar, too, has lent his support to a water harvesting project in the village Pimpode Bidruk, Satara, Maharashtra. Not only are these celebs taking a stand for preserving nature and natural resources, but they are also willing to implementing it in their personal lives too, including landmark events, like weddings.

Three recent weddings saw the ‘Go Green’ mantra come to the fore. It definitely has an impact when icons who have a mass appeal and millions of followers take a step in the right direction. These celeb weddings may inspire you to take a green leaf out of their book...

SONAM KAPOOR AND ANAND AHUJA

There was much curiosity about the wedding invites that the couple would send out for their big day. However, the two opted to send out elegantly designed e-invites to all the guests. Both, Sonam and Anand, believe in conserving natural resources. They decided to send wedding cards over email and WhatsApp rather than wasting paper. The families of the to-be-weds supported their decision. The e-invites, too, had a green theme with designs of flora and fauna in the background.

ANUSHKA SHARMA AND VIRAT KOHLI

Anushka, who on her 30th birthday (May 1) began work on an animal shelter, often highlights the need to be environmentally-friendly in her tweets and posts. Little wonder then, she made her urge to plant trees as part of her wedding invitations, too. The actress and now-husband Virat included a sapling with every invite that they sent out for their wedding.

MILIND SOMAN AND ANKITA KONWAR

Milind Soman is an inspiration to all those who want to achieve and maintain their fitness levels. On April 22, he tied the knot with girlfriend Ankita. Two days later, on April 24, the actor posted a picture planting a sapling with his wife. In fact, the couple planted one for every guest who had attended the celebrations. Milind captioned the picture saying, “Nurture the gifts you have received. Planting a tree with @earthy_5 for every guest, 11 done! (sic)”

NOT JUST WEDDINGS

JACKIE’S GREEN GIFT

Jacqueline Fernandez sends Christmas goodies to all her friends in Mumbai before the festival. One such hamper included a red and green poinsettia plant beside the traditional plum cake and candies. The Christmas gifts are something she personally looks into while selecting them.

HOLLYWOOD DID IT, TOO

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY AND JAMES RIGHTON

Keira Knightley wore an upcycled Rodarte dress as her wedding gown when she tied the knot with musician James Righton on May 4, 2013. She wore the same ensemble in a pre-BAFTA party a few weeks before that. For her wedding, she added a classic Chanel jacket to the ensemble.

ANNE HATHAWAY AND ADAM SHULMAN

Anne Hathaway picked the same location and wedding planner as Natalie Portman for her marriage to Adam Shulman on September 29, 2012. Their nature-inspired wedding was an intimate affair and saw the use of surrounding natural elements. Like Natalie’s reception, the dinner menu was completely vegan.

NATALIE PORTMAN AND BENJAMIN MILLEPIED

Natalie Portman married Benjamin Millepied by the Big Sur Coast on August 4, 2012. She carried wildflowers picked from around the venue for her walk down the aisle. Keeping with the theme, the couple gave guests packets of wildflower seeds.

 AMY SMART AND CARTER OOSTERHOUSE

Amy Smart and Carter Oosterhouse made sure that their wedding on September 10, 2011, was entirely green. The couple planned their fully-sustainable wedding over five months. They had over 220 guests, but only half a bag of garbage at the end of the day. They were able to accomplish this by composting and recycling everything used during the day.
