The 66th National Awards were announced on Friday and in what could probably be a first in recent years, Bollywood films and actors outshone the regional cinema in various categories. The Awards for Best Director and
Actor were cornered by Hindi films. Ayushmann Khurrana and Vicky Kaushal were adjudged the Best Actors for their performances in AndhaDhun and Uri: The Surgical Strike, respectively.  “It’s truly humbling and hugely gratifying to win the coveted National Awards. As an artiste, I have always tried to back disruptive content that stands out for its quality content. The honour is a validation of my hard work, my belief system, my journey in movies and my reason to be an actor in the first place. Over and above my personal win, I’m thrilled that both the films that I have done — AndhaDhun and Badhaai Ho have won at the prestigious National Awards. It again validates that people of our country want to see cinema that entertains, that they can cherish, discuss and endorse,” said Ayushmann He added that AndhaDhun is a path-breaking film and director Sriram Raghavan deserves all the accolades for creating a new genre of cinema for Indian audiences to enjoy. “I have been truly fortunate to be a part of Sriram’s vision and congratulate my director for his genius. As an artiste, the film challenged me and I strongly feel it made me a better actor.”

His other movie, Badhaai Ho, too, won a couple of gongs — Best Wholesome Entertainer and Sureka Sukri as Best Supporting Actress.

Director Amit Sharma said, “This is overwhelming. When we made this film we didn’t expect it to receive this reception. It’s nothing short of a dream come true for our first film production to win a National Award.”

Meanwhile, Ayushmann took to the social media to give special credit to his co-star. “Congratulations to the entire Badhaai Ho team... and Surekha Sikri ma’am you’re the best!”

The Shubh Mangal Saavdhan star, who shared the award with Vicky Kaushal for Uri: The Surgical Strike, wrote about his bond with the star. “This guy is a gem. As soon as he got to know about his/our victory in the National Awards, he called me and congratulated me. Vicky yara I am so proud of you.

Thank you for being so gracious. Lots of Love (sic),” he wrote alongside a picture an award show.

On his part, Vicky, in a statement said, “Words might fall short to describe the happiness I’m feeling right now. For my work to be recognised by the honourable National Film Awards Jury is truly a moving moment for me and my family. I wish to thank each and every member of the jury committee for finding me worthy of the prestigious Best Actor Award. I’am also very happy to be sharing the award with someone whom I admire, both, as a person and as an actor. Ayushmann, Congratulations, brother!”

Reacting to the award for the Best Director, Aditya Dhar, who made his debut with Uri: The Surgical Strike, said, “15 years of failures, rejections and hard work has lead to this moment and it just can’t get better than this. Being conferred with the National Award  has been a dream since the time I understood what films meant to me, and films truly mean the world to me. Most importantly I am dedicating this award to each and every brave soldier of our country and their families.”

Twinkle Khanna, whose maiden production venture Pad Man won the Award for Best Movie on Social Issues says, “It’s a great honour to win this prestigious award and I am overwhelmed to receive so much love for my first production. Pad Man is not just just a movie, but a movement. Our intention was to start a dialogue where women are not held back or embarrassed because of their biology.”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is ecstatic over his win as the Best Music Director Award for Padmaavat. The filmmaker, who has also composed the music said, “I’m very happy and honoured. Music has always been an important part of my life so this award is special.”
