Bollywood icon Dilip Kumar's sketch painted by legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray goes viral on social media

Dilip Kumar passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 98 and was laid to rest around 5 pm at the Santacruz Kabristan with full state honours.

Hindi cinema’s icon, Dilip Kumar passed away on Wednesday (July 7) at the age of 98. Hours after his demise, a sketch of Kumar made by legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray surfaced on social media. Dilip Kumar breathed his last at Mumbai Hinduja Hospital where he was admitted on June 30 due to age-related problems.

A Twitter user named Bhaswati Ghosh shared Dilip Kumar’s sketch with a caption in Bengali that said, “Satyajit Ray er aanka (Painted by Satyajit Ray).” The caricature sketch is painted with black ink on white paper and shows the late actor with a big smile.

The sketch has been and retweeted by several people. “Just wonderful,” said one user while another commented, “Just awesome.”

The news of Dilip Kumar’s demise was shared by his family friend Faisal Farooqui on Twitter. “With a heavy heart and profound grief, I announce the passing away of our beloved Dilip Saab, few minutes ago. We are from God and to Him we return. Faisal Farooqui,” he tweeted.

The late actor’s funeral took place with full state honours ad declared by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The entertainment industry mourned the demise of the legendary actor and several politicians and celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Kapoor and Karan Johar among others visited Dilip Kumar’s residence to pay their last respects.

Dilip Kumar was laid to rest around 5 pm at the Santacruz Kabristan in the presence of his wife and heavy police security. Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan also visited the Kabristan later. 

Known as the tragedy king of Bollywood, Dilip Kumar has acted in 65 films in a career spanning over six decades. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and Padma Vibhushan in 2015. He is known for his iconic roles in movies like ‘Devdas’ (1955), ‘Naya Daur’ (1957), ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ (1960), ‘Ganga Jamuna’ (1961), ‘Kranti’ (1981), and ‘Karma’ (1986). His last film was ‘Qila', which was released in 1998. He is now survived by his wife and veteran actor Saira Banu.
