Biopics of unsung heroes: From Akshay Kumar's 'Pad Man' to Hrithik Roshan's Super 30

Along with the big and the famous, here’s a look at comparatively lesser-known people whose stories will also find a place on the silver screen soon

It continues to rain biopics in Bollywood, with stories of celebrities like Gulshan Kumar (Mogul starring Akshay Kumar), Saina Nehwal (Shraddha Kapoor in Saina), Sanjay Dutt (being played by Ranbir Kapoor), Rani Lakshmi Bai (Kangana Ranaut in Manikarnika) and many more being adapted for the big screen. However, there are achievers who may not be as far-famed as the names mentioned above, but whose accomplishments cannot be undermined. Deservedly so, they are about to have their stories told on celluloid. Here are some biopics that the audience can expect soon.

Akshay Kumar as Arunachalam Muruganantham
Pad Man

After Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Akshay is all set to deliver another powerful story on the big screen, that of Arunachalam Muruganantham. Not only did the social entrepreneur from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, invent a low-cost sanitary pad machine that became an important tool aiding in menstrual hygiene for rural women but also created jobs and a source of income for many of them. The trailer gives us a glimpse of the numerous struggles that Arunachalam had to face in his endeavour.

After MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Sushant Singh Rajput will reprise the story of another sportsman on the silver screen. This time, it’s India’s first Paralympic gold medalist, Murlikant Petkar in a biopic that is being directed by Prashant Singh. The erstwhile boxer and army man of the craftsman rank suffered irreversible injuries in the 1965 war against Pakistan. As his career as a soldier ended, he continued to serve the country and turned into a sportsman. He took up swimming, table tennis and javelin throw, and won a gold medal in swimming at the 1970 Commonwealth Games as well as the Paralympics in Germany (1972), along with setting a world record in freestyle swimming the same year. Sushant has been quoted as saying that he thinks such compelling stories of extraordinary people need to be retold.

Hrithik Roshan as Anand Kumar
Super 30

Anand Kumar is famed for his Super 30 programme, which prepares 30 aspiring IITians from economically-backward stratum to crack the entrance exams, with an incredible success rate. The mathematician will soon find a portrayal on screen in the film to be directed by Vikas Bahl. Hrithik Roshan will essay Anand’s role.

Boman Irani as Kailash Satyarthi

In this biopic, Boman will be seen as the 2014 Nobel Laureate and Indian children’s rights activist Kailash Satyarthi. The founder of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Kailash and his team have rescued more than 83,000 kids from slavery, child labour and trafficking. The movie, to be directed by National Award-winning director Brahmanand Singh, tells the story of a girl, Jhalki, who goes to Boman in search of her brother who is a child labourer.

Daya Bai

The activist from Kerala, originally known as Mercy Mathew, has dedicated her life to the betterment of tribals in Madhya Pradesh by setting up a school, empowering ignored villages and starting a campaign to eradicate poverty.

The biopic, titled Daya Bai, will depict those works and chronicle how someone from a prosperous Christian family left her hometown, Pala, at 16 to become a nun but later went on to work for the tribals in central India. It will also depict her work for the people. Directed by Sree Varun, the movie stars Babumoshai Bandookbaz’s lead, Bidita Bag, in the role of the social activist. Reportedly, a part of the film will also be about the physical attacks Daya Bai had to suffer over the years.

Deepa Malik casting yet to be done

Just like Murlikant Petkar, another paralympian, Deepa Malik, will find a portrayal on screen in a film that’s being produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. The sportswoman is India’s first and only woman to win a (silver)  medal at the Paralympic Games in 2016. Deepa was left paralysed chest down after a surgery to remove a tumour in her spinal column. The athelete went on to win 54 golds at the national level and 13 at international in swimming, javelin throw and shot put. She won the Arjuna Award in 2012 and received the Padma Shri this year. The film will reportedly go on floors early next year.
