Spring Summer 2019 runways, too, see this style getting popular like never before as spotted at Burberry, Acne Studios, Theory, Tibi and Givenchy

High-waist trousers and denims have been a Bollywood mainstay for the past couple of weeks seen on the likes of Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and Sonam K Ahuja. While Kat teamed her Zara pair with a cami wrap, Deepika tucked her turtle neck top into her wide-legged bottoms, which skimmed way above her waist. Spring Summer 2019 runways, too, see this style getting popular like never before as spotted at Burberry, Acne Studios, Theory, Tibi and Givenchy.
If one looks at fashion history, this classic look shot to prominence, thanks to Hollywood beauty Katharine Hepburn, who would look statuesque in high-waist pants accented by a tucked-in blouse and an in-built belt. Designer Ohaila Khan observes that the newer versions of this style reflect a ’90s spirit exemplified by longer forks and a slightly baggy feel. “They make a great choice for work wear. They have a sense of dressiness to them, which makes it a great day-to-night silhouette. It’s also very body flattering as they tend to clinch and highlight the slimmest part of one’s waist,” says Ohaila.
One could elevate or tone down these depending on one’s mood and occasion. Designer Ridhi Mehra hails them as “sexy, versatile and youthful! It’s a silhouette that’s statement-making, polished, and figure-flattering all at once. You can style them casually with a droopy T-shirt or a casual turtleneck. Finish off with sneakers or mules. For a more polished look, I recommend styling them with a crisp white, high-collar shirt and kitten heels. Give your look a ’90s touch by pairing these jeans with a grungy rock tee and white kicks.”
Fashion has become cyclical and people are returning to eras where they feel they have a kinship; even if it wasn’t the era of their childhood. Designer Eshaani Jayaswal opines, “These pants are extremely flattering and work well on most body types. The millennials have adapted the ’90s trends and made them look even cooler. Sexy or sweet, androgynous or edgy — dress up in these beauties to channel a vintage vibe. They can be teamed well with corsets and a draped metallic belt giving it a complete retro feel.”
