Anurag Kashyap has often locked horns with Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over many of his films, including Black Friday, Bombay Velvet and Udta Punjab. So when he got the chance to direct the Netflix Indian original series Sacred Games, based on author Vikram Chandra’s novel, the filmmaker jumped at it. “It’s not just that the book provides me with so much material to work on, but also the fact that Netflix gives me the freedom to do so much I’ve always held back on,” he said. As the cliché goes, with freedom comes great responsibility and Anurag is well aware of that. “I think I have always been a responsible filmmaker and the proof is that my films have actually not been censored, even though it was a long road to freedom and I managed to fight my battles. I know what freedom is and I’ve always fought for it,” he said. Revealing some trivia attached to the book, the filmmaker said that while Vikram Chandra was researching for his book, and Suketu Mehta was researching for Maximum City, Anurag was doing research for Black Friday. “All three of us were speaking to the same people,” he laughed, “So there is a sort of karmic connection with the book. So my responsibility is to be honest with the material and give vision to what has come from the author,” he added.
