Officials of Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) have decided to confer an honorary D. Litt on actor Amitabh Bachchan. Sources said that the Governor Kesari Nath Tripathi who is also the Chancellor of universities under the state government had given his approval for the proposal.

Bachchan would be honoured for his contribution to the acting world on May 8 at the annual convocation function of the university. He would be one of the four persons from different fields who would be honoured. This is the first time a state university has decided to confer such honour to the superstar.

University authorities said they were yet to receive the confirmation from Tripathi. “We had sent it to the Raj Bhavan for an approval about 10 days ago and we are expecting it any day now,” said RBU vice chancellor Sabyasachi Basu Roychowdhury, talking to DNA. He also said that the other three names were vocalist Pandit Amiyaranjan Bandopadhyay, writer Nabamita Deb Sen and artist sculptor Jatin Das.

“The function is likely to take place at the usual venue, at our Jorasanko campus of the university, the place where Rabindranath Tagore lived and breathed his last,” he added. There has been however, no reaction from Bachchan  so far.
