Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgn is padded up and ready to hit another century. His February 22 release Total Dhamaal, directed by Indra Kumar and co-starring Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi and Jaaved Jaaferi, is doing wonders at the box office. With Golmaal Again, Raid and this film to his credit, Ajay has scored a hattrick at the box office. The reticent actor is thrilled with the turn of events, but besides accepting the congratulations that are pouring in from all quarters, he refuses to say much.

SEASON TO CHEER

The superstar, who is also a co-producer of the film, has reason to celebrate the success of his latest outing. Moreover, Total Dhamaal is his biggest ‘non-holiday’ opener. As veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “In the past, #SinghamReturns and #GolmaalAgain had amassed massive numbers, but both opened on big holidays (sic).”

AJAY V/S AJAY

In comparison to his previous releases that opened in cinemas on a national holiday, like August 15 or Diwali 2017, Ajay’s latest offering on a normal Friday has held strong. Adarsh shared the opening weekend number online: “2014: #SinghamReturns Rs 77.69 cr/ #IndependenceDay release; 2017: #GolmaalAgain Rs 87.60 cr/ #Diwali release; 2019: #TotalDhamaal Rs 62.40 cr/non-holiday release. India biz (sic).”

HIT OVERSEAS, TOO

The comic caper sprung a big surprise in the overseas territories, too. Adarsh observed, “Section of the industry feels this genre, generally, finds the going tough, but there are always exceptions,” and shared the ‘exceptional’ figures of Total Dhamaal: “Weekend biz: $3.410 mn (Rs 24.16 cr)... USA+Canada: $981k; UAE+GCC: $1.12 mn; UK: $322k; Australia: $241k; RoW: $746k (sic).”

NOT HIKED TICKET PRICES

Stating that the roller-coaster adventure ride has an edge over other mass entertainers, Adarsh says, “Families and the kids are patronising Total Dhamaal big time. Not surprising that mass circuits, single screens, metro cities and plexes in Tier II cities are ‘collectively’ putting up a strong total. Also, what is important to note is that the ticket prices are normal, and NOT hiked up as is the case with festival releases. So, that’s a big plus.”

The film, that has surpassed the Rs 50 cr mark on Day 3 (February 24) and Rs 75 cr mark on Day 5 (February 26), “will comfortably cross Rs 92 cr in Week 1 and cruise past Rs 100 cr in Weekend 2,” says Adarsh, adding, “It has already emerged the highest grossing film in the #Dhamaal series. (sic)”
