The JP Dutta film revisits India’s triumph over China in the 1967 military clashes
On September 11, 1967, Chinese troops launched an attack on Indian posts at Nathu La along the Indo-Sikkim border. At the end of an aggressive onslaught that played out over four days from our forces, China’s PLA (People’s Liberation Army) called for a ceasefire on September 15. A month later, the PLA initiated another duel at Cho La along the India-Sikkim border. But the alert and well-prepared Indian forces retaliated, compelling the enemy to call for an end to the fight on the same day. Now, 51 years since India gave China ‘a bloody nose’, writer-director JP Dutta brings alive on screen the bravery of our armed forces personnel with his war-epic Paltan. The film’s trailer releases today.
Featuring an ensemble cast comprising Jackie Shroff, Arjun Rampal, Sonu Sood, Gurmeet Choudhary, Harshvardhan Rane, Siddhanth Kapoor and Luv Sinha among others, the movie showcases the untold story of the Indian soldiers, who forced China into a ceasefire.
Aided by the added advantage of higher altitude at Sebu La and Camel’s Back in the North-Eastern state, Indian jawans pushed back the PLA infiltrators and destroyed many of the enemy’s bunkers, cornering them into an ‘uneasy’ ceasefire within five days in September 1967.
“Paltan is my ode to India, as I complete my war trilogy after Border (1997) and LOC Kargil (2003),” says JP, adding, “This film showcases the brotherhood that our soldiers have and how they go beyond the call of duty when it comes to saving our motherland.” Shariq Patel, CEO, Zee Studios, which is producing the film along with the National Award-winning filmmaker, says, “We are happy to join hands with JP Dutta for Paltan, with which he completes his war trilogy. It’s an honour for Zee Studios to portray the story of Indian soldiers, who fought bravely during the 1967 battle.”
With power-packed performances, the ambitiously-mounted movie, which sees JP return to this genre 15 years after LOC Kargil, tells the riveting story of the bravery of Indian soldiers, who fought with their brothers next to them till the end.
