Singer-songwriter Rashmeet Kaur and DJ and music producer Su Real have won the first digital reality show, The Remix. The duo talks about bagging the trophy, being judged by Sunidhi Chauhan, Amit Trivedi and Nucleya, and what’s next for them.

Tell us about the overall experience on The Remix...

Rashmeet Kaur: It wasn’t like a regular reality show where songs are played as they are. I learnt so much in such a short span of time because we experimented a lot with the tracks. Here, we had the freedom to change the melody, add lyrics, rap, beatbox, etc.

Su Real: It was the experience of a lifetime. This world of TV and Bollywood is a new thing for me. The process of developing music for the show was like Music Production Boot Camp; it was a tremendously rewarding experience as an artiste — it helped me discover what I’m capable of and inspired me to do more.

Did the panel of judges unnerve you?

R: Initially, I was nervous performing in front of them. But they are really cool judges and people. They used to wish us luck before every episode and it became a friendly connection with them. We got a lot of feedback that helped us as a team.

S: As a musician, it was a relief to be judged by musicians whom I respect and who have achieved so much in their careers. In fact, I always looked forward to the feedback — it was like having the three most amazing professors at music school! And when you got the top marks or a standing ovation from one of them, oh, boy! That felt amazing.

What’s next?

R: I’m a singer-songwriter. So, I have a lot of original music coming up. I’m also working with Amit and Nucleya and other new names. Su Real and I are also working on some tracks.

S: There’s going to be so much new music — singles, EP, music videos, and collaborations. I look forward to working with Manasi Scott, Rashmeet, Thomson Andrews, and Yash Narvekar from the show. I’m finishing remixes for NSG. I did a bunch of mash-ups with DJ Skip for my mix on Bobby Friction’s show on BBC Asian Network and we have an original, too. But first, we’re going to do a little tour to celebrate the big win. I love having a chance to test new material in the club.
