Why I Hate Luv Storys is such a dud

| Saturday, July 3, 2010

Some movies are best watched through their trailers. The latest to movie to join this elite list is I Hate Luv Storys.

Here is how a popular trailer of the movie goes.

Guy: Naam?

Article continues below the advertisement...

Girl: Simran

Guy: Kitni filmi naam hai... Tumhara koi boyfriend to nahi, jiska naam Raj hai?

Girl: Mere fiancé ka naam Raj hai.

And that ladies and gentlemen is the only half decent scene in the entire movie. So if you have seen the trailer you have seen the movie as such. No point wasting Rs 400 over the weekend on a multiplex ticket and then paying Rs 100 for a popcorn which isn't worth more than two rupees anyway.

Having said that there are several good points in the movie.

Sonam Kapoor:She is not that bad. I mean when you have competition from the likes ofKatrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone, where the director just about says cut, once they have managed to mouth their lines in Hindi correctly, Sonam sure knows her Hindi well. And thus can act.

Imran Khan: Imran Khan is not much of an actor (Imran can't act saala...oops bad joke) .I mean you got to have seen Luck and that moviewith "thunder thighs" Minisha Lamba, where Lamba plays an eighteen year old girl (Erggggg....) whom Khan kidnaps....yes that was the name of the movie.... Kidnap...So you got to have seen these movies to know what I mean.

As far as his first movie Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is concerned, I mean what else can you say other than the fact that his two mamu jaans (Aamir Khan and Mansoor Khan) produced the movie. Also the script written by Abbas Tyrewala was really a spoof on Hindi cinema, and really required a non-acting actor...you know what I mean...and Imran fitted the bill perfectly.

But the young hip cool look does suit him in I Hate Luv Storys before he starts to ham S S S S Simran....

The chemistry between the lead pair is just about okay. Ranbir does suit Sonam just a wee bit more. Mmm....only if the chemistry between the lead pair could make the movie a hit. Remember Silsila, with Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha, what chemistry, and what a resounding flop.

The music sounds rather peppy on the first listening, but soon you realise that Vishal and Shekhar have essentially used all their leftover tunes from Dostana, given that Dostana 2 is not going anywhere.

But these are just peripheral reasons of why the movie is such a dud. The real reason is the fact that Karan Johar hasn't got a half decent script since he made Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which was a genuinely different and a fresh movie, at that point of time. I mean you could even say Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, was just about there. But after that it's all been downhill, the media hype notwithstanding.

Kal Ho Na Ho, which Johar wrote and was directed by his former assistant Nikhil Advani (who went onto make the super duds of all super duds Chandni Chowk to China, and managed to convince Warner Brothers to produce and Akshay Kumar to act on the basis of a single poster that he had made of the film. There was no script or for that matter anything else planned.) cannot be anaylsed due to ethical reasons. It was essentially a total lift of Anand, set in New York with of course Shahrukh doing a Kaka. In some other country with better copyright laws, the makers would have been sued.

Then came this super dud called Kaal, which Kjo produced with Shahrukh. Of course they made the movie only to realise, gadbad ho gayi, and frantically added an item number with Shahrukh and Mallaika Arora at the beginning to ensure that kum se kum ek weekend ke leeye to log aa jaayen...

Then came Kabhi Alvida Na Kahna, which had the most promising star casts in recent years. What the movie did was clearly show Karan Johar's lack of experience when it comes to a man-woman relationship.

Hmmm, the recent past has seen Karan producing Kurbaan, which just put you to yawn (Kurbann was such a yawn, I mean that even rhymes). Then there was Wake Up Sid, which was so slow and thanda ki you were left thinking ke bhai behan ki kahani hai kya?It was like the lead pair of this movie almost said I Hate Love Storys. Also a leading numerologist thought that it was not advisable for Karan to have junked his lucky letter K and that ensured that the movie did not do well (Okay I made that up.) But if K was such a koncern....oops I seem to be getting my Ks and Cs mixed up....was such a concern then Dostana, wouldn't have worked.

My Name is Khan was lucky to have got all the publicity it did, for all the wrong reasons. Try watching the movie now without the entire charged atmosphere, and the Sena not gunning for Shahurkh. You'll know it is probably the worst movie Karan Johar has ever made. Kabhi Alvida Na Kahna was such a gem in comparison.

So all that leaves us with I Hate Love Storys, which at its heart is Dilwale Dulhainya Le Jayenge(DDLJ), and also has shades of Dil Chahta Hai. The tragedy is DDLJ was made 15 years ago and released on October 1, 1995 (this writer saw the first day first show at Uphar cinema in Ranchi).

So the bottom-line is if people have already seen DDLJ, and for those who haven't can pick up the ninety rupee DVD, why would they watch a rehashed version of the same movie? And that to 15 years later? And to those who did, my sympathies. The good part though is you have contributed to the gross domestic product of the country and have brought the multiplier effect into play. (What was that? Well, we will leave that for another piece I guess)

It is like film directors trying to remake Sholay till almost 20 years after its release, until the truth dawned that another Sholay cannot be made. Or when everyone suddenly wanted to make a shaadi ka movie like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Like Sholay and HAHK before it, another DDLJ cannot be made. But producers and directors and writers refuse to learn. It is like someone once said "everybody in the film industry wants a new story that has already been made before".

I am not able to understand your point of view that Kal Ho Na Ho is a copy of Anand. If a hero of any film has some disease and dies in the end, does it automatically make this a copy of Anand? No way. Both have very different story lines and very good movies.

Wow, why are the majority of the commentators on this blog juvenile? Can you guys not learn to refute the guy's opinion with a sounder argument rather than getting personal?
How old are y'all... like three?

yes... I watched the movie and it's just a waste of money and time. Imran first needs to learn acting. The script itself is so boring and repetitive. FULL FLOP movie.

Talking about remakes, Hum Aapke Hain Koun was a rehash of Nadiya Ke Paar (from the same production house).

Only in India a midget actor like Aamir promotes another midget like Imran and gets him a hero's role. This guy is short, ugly, and boring... even in Bangladesh, he would get a role of a waiter. But in India, it is all about connections, including underworld.

After watching the movie, I can say that the review is absolutely wrong. We go to see a movie for entertainment and it has provided the same. Each & every movie cannot be a Sholay. If somebody expects it that way then his head has to be examined.

I haven't watched the movie just yet. But looking at the review, dude, get yourself checked please. You are way too rude and depressing! I hate luv storys is a movie for people with open and beautiful hearts! :)

Wow, dude, what are you trying to prove here, that Bollywood movies suck? And Bollywood actors can't act? You should learn to act first, at least they can act better than you. And yeah, about scripts, why don't you try writing a movie script? I guess that's when you'll realize how hard it is to make a movie. You have criticized all the blockbusters or critically acclaimed movies. You have just made fun of yourself.

Seeing the popularity of the movie with gen next, looks like Karan Johar has hit the nail on its head... the sensibilities of the newer generations must be different as is apparent from various comments that you have received. I for one, agree partially with the your article. I hated the movie and wanted to walk out after half-an-hour... but I did enjoy Wake Up Sid. About SRK movies, the last one I saw was Kuch Kuch Hota Hai... and the only one of his movies that I ever liked was Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa.

Dude, your review somehow didn't sound like a review. Let me tell you in your own way. Try reading your review after a couple of weeks when the hype n hoopla of release are gone and you will know what exactly I am saying. Your review looks like a K-Jo bashing session in chronological order.

I, too, didn't think the movie was earth-shatteringly good. But c'mon... it was enjoyable. Think you completely missed the point here. I liked the movie, Imran and Sonam make a great pair and the movie had some witty/funny moments.

For me it was total paisa-wasool.... now who cares for 'idhar udhar ki baatein wagera wagera :-)'

THE movie was fab. you have to be young at heart to love it! now an uncle can't explain that, yaar! imran-sonam jodi rocked in every scene, songs were so good that my 13-year-old brother, who hates Bollywood movies, loved it! Why listen to this crap, just watch the movie and decide for yourself. Totally worth your money!

mnik is one of the best films in bollywood. maybe you didn't understand the real meaning of it. you seem to talk negatively about almost every movie. then, according to you, which is the best movie in bollywood?

I know that this film is not the greatest, but I really enjoyed this film. It is well-made as a Hindi film. Your blog upset me as well. Readers, don't take this review 100%. And I recommend you get rid of your pic from the front page.

I absolutely agree. The movie was horrible. KHNH, MNIK, and Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na are good, though! Imran Khan just needs to learn to act and dance and then he will be all right.

You seem to be making the same mistake that Karan Johar did in this film. You have revisited KJo's films much as he did in IHLS. I lost interest in both the film and your blog halfway.

The movie is surely a one-time watch. It is surely not as bad as you are making it out to be. Rather, all the fun you are making of the various romantic flicks being made in the Hindi film industry was made as well by Punit Malhotra in IHLS. I would rather say, IHLS is a true 'with the time' love story based on and inspired by all 'dancing around the trees' movies, alongside making fun of all that.... The first half is classic. The second half was too predictable, but who cares.... Imran and Sonam looked awesome together.... and Imran surely acted well, both in IHLS and JTYJN. You need to get yourself checked. The music, whether originally made for Dostana or not, was awesome, and suited the storyline of IHLS.

What are you writing? Are you nuts? This movie is a big hit. Amazing movie. Full entertainer. All the big reviewers like Taran Adarsh, Jitesh Pillai, TOI have given it the best reviews. Even audiences are enjoying this lovely, beautiful, fun-filled love story... So who the hell are you? People, go and watch the film. Don't listen to these thakela reviewers.

This blog sounds like a case of sour grapes. I have not seen IHLS, but saying that Kal Ho Na Ho and MNIK did not deserve their success, is so stupid and dumb. If you don't like a movie, it doesn't mean that others didn't. At least learn to acknowledge certified blockbusters like KHNH and MNIK... Mr. Know-it-all!

I don't think you really understood the movie that well. It was a movie that managed to make fun of itself and the entire family drama genre and was still quite entertaining.

The fact that you expect a "star cast" to make a good movie and not a good writer/story demonstrates why you were irritated by this flick!

You are such a loser. IHLS is a good, entertaining movie... it was never made to change the face of Indian cinema. It's an entertaining movie. I think you were drunk when you watched the movie. The theatre where I watched it everyone enjoyed the movie. So people, stop reading these stupid reviews. Maybe Imran & Sonam didn't give them dates for interviews.
