Tihar Jail awaits how many more?

| Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Never before in Indian history have so many powerful and influential people been sent to jail on charges of corruption and denied bail week after week.

On Monday afternoon, Cineyug Films director, Karim Morani, became the latest high profile accused in the 2G spectrum case to enter Tihar Jail after his bail plea was rejected by a special CBI court.

Till this case and the Commonwealth Games scam erupted and the courts were seized of the matter, the Kanimozhis and Kalmadis of Indian politics and the Balwas and Goenkas of Indian business could virtually buy anything with their money. They flew in their own planes and helicopters, lived luxurious, five star lives and used their power and influence to not just bend rules but create their own. From this rarefied environment of the rich and the mighty, they have been brought down to living a prisoner's life and reporting every morning for the mandatory roll call.

At the last count, three politicians who were immensely powerful in their own domains (A Raja, Kanimozhi and Suresh Kalmadi), four heads of large business enterprises (Shahid Balwa, Vinod Goenka, Sanjay Chandra and Karim Morani) and four high-ranking corporate executives (Gauatam Doshi, Surendra Pipara, Hari Nair and Sharad Kumar) have been in prison for periods ranging from less than a day to more than three months. Not to be forgotten are the nearly dozen bureaucrats arrested in the CWG and 2G scams.

All ofthem are crying that they are innocent till proven guilty, which is true. It is, however, worth pondering on the judge's comments while dismissing the bail pleas in the 2G spectrum scam.

On May 23, Justice Ajit Bharioke of the Delhi high court observed: "When loss is caused to the state exchequer, every citizen suffers because the money could have been used for the development of the country or for public welfare measures like food, health, education, etc. In this case, the petitioners' criminal conspiracy caused financial loss and gains in their companies. This is an offence of the highest magnitude, which not only impacts the society at large but also puts a question mark on the governance of the country and adversely affects the economy of the country."

With a man of impeccable integrity like justice Sarosh Homi Kapadia at the helm in the Supreme Court, do not be surprised if the courts are gripped with a new awakening and seriousness while dealing with high profile corruption cases. In fact, this is already serving as a beacon to the high courts dealing with similar cases (e.g. the Adarsh housing society scam in Mumbai).

Being imprisoned- and convicted- on corruption charges is humiliating, worse than any heavy fine that could be imposed for tax evasion. However, prison life per se, is not necessarily humiliating.

The great freedom fighters who constantly went in and out of jail, valued their prison experiences- it offered an opportunity for silence, reflection and contemplation.

Mahatma Gandhi felt it was honourable to go to prison for a just cause. A major portion of his autobiography was dictated in Gujarati while in Pune's Yerawada Jail.

Jawaharlal Nehru wrote copiously in prison. His famous Glimpses of World History is a collection of 196 letters that he wrote to Indira Gandhi from various prisons during 1930-33.While in the Dhule prison, Vinoba Bhave gave discourses on the Bhagwad Gita which were transcribed by Sane Guruji and later published as Gita Pravachane- Vinoba's incisive commentaries on the Gita.

Life in prison can be positive and transformative. If you allow it to be.

The man by nature is greedy and want to accumulate wealth to be honored in public life. The so called high profile people are no exception. In fact this a side effect of rapid economic growth of our country and everyone want to become millionaire over night given an oppurtuny. Politicians and babus are no exception since they are managing huge amount of country's money as compared to what they get for.And while misappropriating public money they have never thought of getting into jail in even distance dream. Now it is time to reform them-self in jail spiritually by adopting yogic therapy. Shri Shri Ravishanker can play good role in transforming them to follow healthy and greed free life. The existing politicians and IAS babus can also be given spiritual training of detached involvement while handling large social projects.I surprise when certain politicians and babus give statement that they are honest and being implicated falsely. The honest person need not to announce but is already known in the circle.

Puneri, do not except any transformation of character from the current generation of politicians. Wait for a couple of months more, the regular offenders would be requesting the officials to shift them elsewhere!

What can anyone do with so much of wealth beyond one's needs and amassed to cover the requirements of the next 20 generations?
Can anyone buy happiness?
Those who perpetrate illegal acts, extortion and other crimes will be paid back in their own coin if at all there exists a God in the Universe.
We can live in only one home, ride in one car and eat only a limited quantity of food.
Any excess consumption will ruin our health, so what is the purpose of all this madness and depravity?

You are right, Kamal. We are blessed in so many ways today and yet people have to die of starvation. There's a lot to think about what Mahatma Gandhi said long back, on the lines, there's enough for everyone's needs but not for everyone's greed.

You say that "This puts a question mark on the governance of the country and adversely affects the economy of the country."

So why is Mr Manmohan Singh not in jail? Why are the rest of the accused not in jail? This is hypocrisy to the extreme. Go to www.2gscam.co.in. You will know the real picture there.
says:

Rajat, that is what judge Ajit Bharioke said. What is happening is extraordinary. Thanks for the link, will check it out.

Mahatma Gandhi and J L Nehru were the persons who travelled Jail, faced humiliation for the sake of our countrymen. These modernday politicians are no different than the Britishers of Gandhi's day. Its a turn of fortune that these culprits are taken into custody otherwise we had been taken into custody. Our thanks are due to Supreme court of India, ED, CBI, S. Swamy for unearthing these scams. The problem of corruption is not going to end by just arresting these faces, our supreme authority should also screw the loose nut bolts of our democracy. Why these people enjoy such an enormous power? Why our dear prime minister is not being taken into custody, because he has defended all culprits including Kalmadi and Kanimozhi. Why his intentions can not be bad, afterall he is not Mahatma Gandhi.
