Team Manmohan, as confused as the British Raj

| Tuesday, August 16, 2011

The Satyagraha as a non-violent form of public protest emerged as a powerful weapon of civil disobedience after it was used again and again by Mahatma Gandhi during our freedom struggle.

The idea was first mooted by the American philosopher Henry David Thoreau and it was Gandhi who effectively demonstrated the enormous impact of various forms of non-violent civil disobedience. A peaceful gathering by disobeying prohibitory orders and courting arrest was one form. Marching to the seashore to symbolically make your own salt was another. The most effective form of Satyagraha was used somewhat rarely, as a last resort- the indefinite hunger strike. That one man's fast would rivet the subcontinent and often deliver quick results- whether this meant quelling communal riots or scoring a compromise with formidable opponents such as the British.

Gandhi's extraordinary capacity to rouse masses did not just bring freedom to India but also brought justice to blacks in the US through Martin Luther King Jr, an avowed follower of the Gandhian doctrine of civil disobedience. In South Africa, it was Nelson Mandela.

When non-violent public protests turn into mass movements, growing bigger by the day, it's not easy to stop them. The nationwide protests against the Emergencythat brought down Indira Gandhi is an instance, with an almost parallel example that originated in Egypt's Tahrir Square and finally dethroned president Hosni Mubarak.

In India, the issue of the day is corruption and the people's complete loss of faith in the politicians to deal with this issue squarely. Ironically, it is the "clean and incorruptible" prime minister Manmohan Singh's team that has lost face in the way it has handled the Lokpal Bill issue.

Barely four months ago, Team Manmohan agreed to include civil society members in the drafting of the Lokpal Bill in a frustrated attempt to bring Anna Hazare's first round of satyagraha to a quick close.

From then on, every attempt was made to discredit the civil society members in the panel- from questioning the inclusion of the father-son legal team of the Bhushans and challenging their integrity right down to calling Anna a corrupt man. Finally, Team Manmohan submitted a diluted version of the bill to parliament and in the intervening period, Baba Ramdev and his supporters were caned out of Delhi. Team Anna was warned that they would suffer a similar fate.

This arrogance of the Congress-led UPA government was on display at every turn and as a final roll-out of the plot, the government decided to thwart Anna's plans for a second satyagraha in Delhi from August 16. Twenty two pre-conditions were imposed and finally Anna was arrested even before he could proceed towards JP Park.

Today's generation could as well imagine Team Manmohanas part of the confused British Raj trying to deal with Mahatma Gandhi.

If the British police had their Rottweilers, Team Manmohan has their equivalents in Congress spokesman Manish Tewari and senior leader Digvijaya Singh who lost no opportunity to try and tear Anna to pieces. Calling him a corrupt man, dismissing his locus standi as he is not elected by the people (unlike our great netas) and telling him how to- and how not to- conduct his protest, were all part of the strategy to scuttle the public crusade against corruption.

It almost seemed that Team Manmohan had won this second round and demonstrated how to effectively puncture a satyagraha. The unfolding events suggest that they erred rather grievously.

@VedPrakash - Anna's team is funded not by RSS / BJP but by foreign organizations (eg Dutch embassy, Ford Foundation etc). Stop blaming BJP / RSS without any basis. Jan Lokpal is a way for anti-nationals like Medha Patkar, Aruna Roy, Harsh Mander and their ilk to rule India on behalf of their white masters, without any accountability.

"Hazare" Kwaishein Aisi

Anna Hazare has declared that he wants the government to accept HIS bill. People who have really read and understood HIS version of the bill have made their opinions about the finer details. I too have those. But what about some things which are not in the bill? Have we conveniently blinded ourselves to the core issue that India faces today?

Any person with bare minimum knowledge will know that most of the NGOs in India are heavily corrupt. Government money which is channelized through NGOs is eaten all the way down. I find it very dubious and surprising that the Janlokpal does not have NGOs in its jurisdiction, and it;s surprising that all the 'Annas' supporting Anna Hazare have not even bothered to question these double standards. You want transparency? Then ask Anna to include NGOs. Oh wait! There are a few NGOs supporting him. What about black money being made white through temple trusts? Isn't that a part of corruption? Oh wait! All the Swamis and Babas of the country are supporting him, aren't they!

The same team which talks about transparency is having 'backchannel' talks with the government. A spiritual Guru is the chief negotiator between the Government and Team Anna. Oh wait! The same spiritual Guru also had a hush-hush meeting with LK Advani. What did they talk about? I want to know. I want to know what the negotiations are. If 'India is Anna, Anna is India' according to the highly respectable Kiran Bedi, then shouldn't India know what India is negotiating?

I find it extremely surprising that when Anna Hazare was arrested on the 16th August, he supposedly sent out a message to Indians pre-empting his arrest. In that video he says that 'Mujhe giraftaar bhi kar liya hai'. And this was 'before' the arrest. Does that mean he knew that he was going to be arrested? Or did the police allow him to set up a camera and give a speech after they arrested him? Hmm. Maybe they should allow every person they arrest to record a short video message. That would be cool.

People are tired of corruption. No doubt. And its something that needs to be checked. No doubt. But does that anger and frustration justify a blind following? Does it mean that we do not have the right to ask questions? People with Anti-Anna opinions have been branded by people as 'Congressi', 'corrupt', 'government proxies' blah blah blah. Just because you are angry, does that mean anarchy is the solution? The Janlokpal bill gives superpowers to one body. Do we want to create yet another body and allow more corruption? Why don't you strengthen the current agencies? You want to start on a clean slate? Then why don't you fight to abolish the current constitution? It's ok to let personal actions be guided by emotions. But here a nation is at stake. Just because you are angry, it doesn't give you, or anyone, the right to mess with my constitution. This display of false nationalism is pathetic to say the least. Lets say the Anna-Lokp

Last night watching Times Now, there was a comment from Congress that all this movement is supported by RSS which is not true. It is not financed by any of the Political Party, RSS or Foreign Power. Congress has shown all the political parties the way to rule, i.e. to follow the British – Divide and Rule. They believe & know for sure that division is the old formula which has always worked for them. Just to add to this information, two days back people sent back 150 BJP supporters from Azad Maidaan in Mumbai as they came under BJP Flag not the tricolor. If Congress has time after collecting money from all sources then they should go & see how people are fed up & it is anguish of people coming out at their own expense.
They should, for the future of country and its youth, stop these nonsense statements. I request all the misguided people from Congress & other parties to go & attend the meetings of Annaji, there they would come to know that he is fasting for future of country.
I request one and all to come out in large numbers to make it clear to the Govt. that we all are united against corruption & we all want better India for our generations to come.

A majority of corruption at ground level is simply to facilitate government process. If I dont have to pay a goverment officer "chiri-miri" imagine the amount of time I will spend in going through all the beurocratic hoops to get my job done.

In India it is very easy to collect a crowd. There are always busy bodies to take up a cause. Every body is ready to end corruption. If all are for eliminating corruption, then who is doing corruption. I am 64 years old and my exprience is that only less than 1% of the people are honest and given a chance all others are ready to get their pound of flesh. And what about the Bhushans and the Bedi. The Bhushans got plots in bulk from Maya against whom they were supposed to fight a case. I think this is worse than corruption and ethically very unacceptable. I hope The Bar Council should look into the matter. The Bedi tried to get her daughter admitted against the quota for the North East.

In my view it is impossible to end corruption. It can only be reduced by making all type of governance transparent and actually reducing the role of the government.Anna is a semi literate person who can not answer a simple question without prompting from a busy body Kejriwal or Bedi. The law making is the responsibility of the parliament and none other.

It is only when the people become ignorant and corrupt, when they degenerate into a populace, that they are incapable of exercising their sovereignty. Usurpation is then an easy attainment, and an usurper soon found. The people themselves become the willing instruments of their own debasement and ruin......Only peoples with clear faces should support the LOkpal....

Could somebody circulate a list of days when Mahatma Gandhi went on fast on different issues? If Britishers could allow so many fasts, why cant our (own ?) Govt? Apparently they are more tyrannical than Britishers. By the way, who is afraid of Anna? And perhaps, why?

The ruling party needs to understand that being in government does not mean that you can do whatever you like for 5 years once you are voted to power. A Democracy does not function like this, you need to keep people engaged and find out what they want from time to time...Clearly, making fools of public and oppressing means does not work in a Democracy. Democracy is all about people and if you do not respect that, you are in for a suprise...

It is rather greed and high headedness of Team Manmohan that resulted in the murky handling of situation arised by Team Anna. Team Manmohan has to see the writting on the wall where it says people are fed up with UPA2. Whatever poor Rajiv tried to do in UP became useless due to arrogant speaches of Team Manmohan. Rajiv should replace them with youngsters.

Just to add more to your viewpoints ...

A lot of people (even non-UPA) are questioning if the means adopted by Anna Hazare is right, i.e., goes against constitution and legalities. Maybe ... but these people are splitting hairs and fail to see the larger picture that when the govt fails to do its duties, it becomes incumbent upon the people to either revolt against such a govt or force it to do the right thing (even if a few minor laws have to be broken in the interest of the larger good).

On another note ... I hope people start throwing shoes at Manmohan Singh pretty soon in his next public appearance.

Anna has the support of the divisive powers of the RSS/BJP and the Hindutva clan who are clamouring to cut a large size of the pie with their dirty knives IF the movement is successful and Anna becomes the victor.
What is the prized Pie! Of course what else, the chance to take over, rule and bring in Hindutva into your class-room and bedroom! Country-cousins of the Taliban!
If my surmise about Anna is wrong, has he any day denied that he is a vocal supporter of RSS? No in fact he praised not only RSS but Hitler too in one of those hush-hush speeches!
