Glückliches neues Jahr (A very Happy New Year)
Before I begin I would like to thank you all for your amazing support...I have been reading all your comments. They make me very happy and encourage me to go on. But due to some technical issue I am not able to respond to them. I will. Let me find out how to do it. I am new to the blogging scene – so please pardon me. I am also sorry to be writing a little late – my lovely school reopened after Christmas vacation. And it is quite an effort to wake up in winter and go to school early morning!

So, how was your New Year’s Eve? Here’s a glimpse of how I kick-started year 2012 with a bang!I was at the biggest open-air New Year’s Party venue in the world. Berlin! At the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate), the most famous landmark of Germany. It is a former gate, like our Gateway of India and India Gate. From many earlier gates in Berlin, this is the only remaining gate through which Berlin could once be entered. After the Berlin wall came down, the Berliners loved to celebrate the New Year here as this is the world’s largest organised party. This venue gives people hope and it is the symbol to tell them that they are all one. Now-a-days, it is mainly the tourists who attend this. Oh and don’t mistake me as one -- I am a Berliner you know... haha! Behind the Tor (gate) was a long 1.2 mile path full of amusement attractions. There were stalls with food, drinks and games. Wooohoo and here comes the best part — more than a million people attended this great affair. There wasn’t strict checking like we have with metaldetectors and stuff like that in Mumbai (this city is really safe). There was just one rule -- no bottles and crackers allowed! The spectacular fireworks were organised there itself. Around 5pm one could easily enter the area and have a look at everything around but it was nearly impossible to see everything, the path was just too long! So, I made the most of my time with my exchange student friends having a glimpse of what was being offered to us and let me confess I wasn’t let down. It had just everything—Berliner Food, Drinks, Great Music and Performances (international DJs), Dance floor, Stage Shows, Light and Laser shows, Cheerful People, and on and on.
There were party tents along the 1.2 mile stretch where people had different bands performing for them. But the best performances were at the Gate where a huge stage was built. I really don’t remember who all performed finally but the German rock band The Scorpions sure did with their famous ‘Rock You Like a Hurricane’. And Oh boy! They were soooo good. Culture Beat, DJ Otzi, Hermes House Band, DJ Bobo, Hot Chocolate and many others were the attractions for LIVE performances! Hmmm... but there was just this little problem --- you had to fight for your chance to go ahead and get a place to view them. If you went at 5pm you could find yourself a good decent place to stand at but if you were late...around 6:30ish you were Dead! I literally mean it. Just imagine -- one million people wanting that spot! Ooh lala! The picture is chaotic, right? There were huge TV screens installed at various places but nothing like seeing it in front of you! I was a bit unlucky in this department...hmm or may be not. You’ll soon find out.I went back near the stage at around 7pm with my friends. You are surely gonna be SHOCKED to know that I was reminded of our Local trains back home and the crowd of people during peek hours. It was THAT jampacked! It was reported that the German authorities had shut the entrance two hours before midnight to stop overcrowding. We wanted to get to the other side of the gate later. It turned out to be a tough task. A path which would have taken us just 5 mins to cross took us an hour because of the huge crowd! We had to make our way by pulling and pushing people. I normally don’t find myself short but my Germans friends are really, really tall! I really had no clue where we were heading to… all I could see was tall people – their backs actually -- ahead and behind me and yeah, the sky above! I don’t think I have looked at the sky for such a long time ever in my life beforeJ Nevertheless, we made it…Yippee! You think we were mad – trying to move to the other side by spending one hour – but tell me who is not mad on New YearJWithin no time it was 11:30pm...someone said it so right you never know when time passes when you are having a great time! Our hearts were beating faster to know what was going to happen next… Suspense... Was the countdown going to be in English or German? Fireowrks… more music? Was it going to turn into a disco??
