I was in primary school in the early eighties when I tackled a version of the following question during a class test: A pedestrian should cross the road only when the signal is a) red or b) green? I ticked red. After all, we didn’t have traffic signals in Jammu where I lived. And in Delhi, that I and my family visited occasionally, one could only cross the busy road when the ‘traffic’ signal turned red and the road cleared for a few seconds.
