My affair with an intern

Before I become another David Letterman and have anyone blackmail me, I will tell you all my story. In my previous job, I had an affair with an intern. And the affair continues till today.

It was not an affair as in the 'Letterman affair', but it is better to make what is clear 'very clear'.

Four interns had joined when I was the boss of a department. And, yes, I got quite close to one of them.

Soon, we were parading around in and outside office as 'boyfriend' and 'girlfriend'.

Before anything got out of hand, I informed the wife. She started by laughing. As the telephone calls increased, she squirmed. Then, the calls got longer, she got suspicious.

When she finally realised that something, indeed, was up, she cried, on my birthday.

The internship then ended but we still keep in touch. I am in a new job, but we are still close friends, very close friends. Though, let me make it crystal clear, there is nothing physical in the relationship.

I did not manipulate perks. I did not plug her stories. I did not sleep with her. I did not let my relationship with my girlfriend affect my relationship with work.

Till today, friends I have met after ages, or those who surface on Facebook, laugh at me. They think I am joking.

One very close friend threatened to throw me out of a party when I told her about my 'girlfriend'.

How can you have a girlfriend when you have a wife and two children, many wonder.

But that is the case.

Now, the wife keeps complaining and cursing about the 'girlfriend' but life goes on.

So, sorry, guys, no one can blackmail me now.

Dan, you're too much. As always. (And hey, what about the girls who secretly adored you but were terrified of your wife and so they never admitted it...?)

Yes, like the girl who I caught staring at me at an editorial meeting. She said she loved my beard (which I then had). Needless to say, I went home that night and shaved!

Only truly candid HR folks can write a blog like this. This cannot be done by others, since we keep piling such instances within the mind and body, till the body gives up. The thought of unusual can sometimes make you feel out of the world.

Fortunately, I am not in HR!

Yes, it is possible. Many times we cannot share some news or stories with our spouse knowing one's nature. So, it is quite natural to be friendly with a person who understands your situation. And it is not physical relations, so why the wife has to worry? Also, you are not abandoning your duties. You love your wife, your family, I think it's fine. This may also happen if there is a vast difference in the level of thinking or cultural difference. Everbody needs some space in life.
