Abu Asim Azmi : A man Indian politics could do without

Friday, 11 April 2014 - 7:35pm IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: dna webdesk

Abu Asim Azmi would do well to leave politics for all the nasty remarks and comments he seems to make ever so often.

From running a small time tourist agency, Abu Asim became famous when he was arrested by the Mumbai Police for allegedly being involved in the 1993 Bombay terror attacks. He was eventually acquitted of the charges but joined politics soon after. His core constituency tends to be the Muslim vote and thankfully he hasn't ever made it too big in politics from Mumbai. But he does love making nasty comments that can keep him in the news.

He is one Maharashtra's richest politicians, with a net worth of over Rs. 100 Cr. In 2009 he refused to take the oath to the Maharashtra legislature in Marathi and was slapped by MLA's from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

This week, just a fortnight before Mumbai goes to the polls, Azmi again made a ridiculous statement stating that women who have sex out of wedlock, regardless of consent, should be hung. Last year he had blamed the Delhi gangrape on western culture,

For a man with such medieval views on women, its any wonder how his daughter in law Ayesha Takia who tends to celebrate the liberal lifestyle tends to tolerates a person like him at home. To be fair, she did come out against her father in laws views, but this isn't the first time he has made his despicable views known.
