Cricket fever in the city claimed the life of a 26-year-old man, who lost a huge amount of money in the betting. The youth hanged himself in his rented accommodation in Yeshwantpur. The deceased, identified as Sreedeep Gowda, was a native of Chikkamagaluru district.
The incident came to light at 10pm on Friday when Gowda's roommate returned from work. When he opened the door, he saw Gowda's body hanging from the ceiling. He immediately alerted the police.
Investigations revealed that Gowda worked for a popular cafe in Yeshwantpur and that he committed suicide because he was unable to pay his debts.
As a cricket enthusiast, Gowda was involved in cricket-betting and had borrowed a huge sum of money from friends and private financiers. When he was asked to repay the money, he was unable to do so.
A few months ago, Gowda went to his hometown and borrowed Rs3lakh from his parents to settle the debts. This amount, however, did not help him settle the dues.
Police said that he became helpless and took the extreme step. There was no suicide note in the room. The police, however, found a paper that had the list of names of people Gowda had taken money from. The list has been handed over to Gowda's parents.
