Rationalists took strong exception to chief minister BS Yeddyurappa’s reported superstitious practices to ward off black magic spell, saying he has been defying the fundamental duties as envisaged by the Indian Constitution.

It was reported that the chief minister has been sleeping in the raw as advised by his personal astrologer. Yeddyurappa had recently said that the opposition parties had cast a spell of witchcraft to harm him.

“In what condition he sleeps is his personal matter. But we wouldn’t have been concerned if he was not the chief minister of the state. He is the constitutionally-elected leader of the state executive and he cannot allow his personal fears and convictions to jeopardise the prospects of the state”, said Dr Narendra Nayak, president of the Federation of Indian Rationalists’ Associations.

It was also reported that Yeddyurappa has been performing surya namaskaras (salute to the sun — a sequence of Hata yoga asana or stance) on river-beds, also in the buff. Neither the chief minister nor the government has confirmed or denied these reports.
Nayak said Yeddyurappa has developed a mania towards black magic and high-pitched religious rituals.

“It has reached such a stage that that on every new moon day, he is said to be observing some new rituals, including sleeping nude to ward off the ill-effects of black magic done to him”, the rationalist said.

He also urged the chief minister to provide evidence of black magic, and offered to help him out of “this mess.”

Yeddyurappa has been bogged down by fear of the unknown and hence, was unfit to occupy the position of the chief minister of a state like Karnataka, the IT capital of India, and home to several premier institutes of science.

“He has perhaps forgotten that he is the constitutional head of the state executive. The duties of a citizen, as stated in Article 51A (f) of the Constitution is ‘to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform.’ By resorting to things like black magic and rituals to ward off its effects, the chief minister has started spreading canards and left the state confused,” Nayak alleged.
