A group of women from Yarabnagar on Sunday defied prohibitory orders and held a protest, demanding that the police kill Mahim, a rowdy suspected to have masterminded the murder of gangster-turned-JD(S) corporator Diwana Ali a week ago.

The women, led by Ali’s four sisters — Shahtaj, Munni, Mumtaz and Parveen, offered to kill Mahim and the other accused in the case, if the police were not willing to eliminate them. They termed the arrests of 11 accused the past week mere ‘eyewash’.

“He (Ali) was a saviour, brother and like a god for Yarabnagar residents,” Ayesha, a protester, said. “The main accused, Mahim, is still at large. If the police are incapable of killing them (the accused), produce them before us. We will kill them in public.”  Ayesha added that if the accused were allowed to go scot-free, more deaths would occur in the locality.

The women held the protest opposite the BBMP office in Yarabnagar, at the spot where Ali and his henchmen were attacked. They braved the prohibitory orders issued under Section 144 for the criminal procedure code, and held the protest for three hours from 3 pm.

The city was under prohibitory orders till Sunday midnight due to the political imbroglio.

“The protest is being lead by women and it is difficult to stop them. It’s not a protest but a strange demand they are making like to kill the accused. The law does not support it. We are trying to convince them and send them back home,” Banashankari police inspector R Govindraju said.

The women said Ali had solved long-standing water and power woes of residents, since his election. “A week after his death, the problems have cropped up yet again,” Shabana, a resident of the area for 15 years, said.
