The Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) on Monday announced that work on expanding the passenger terminal building at the Devanahalli aerodrome will commence in June 2011.

The terminal is currently spread over an area of 70,000 sq metres. On completion of the expansion work, the terminal area will be doubled. The terminal capacity will be increased to over 17 million passengers a year, with the flexibility to expand to 20 million. This is expected to meet the traffic demand for the next few years. Simultaneously, a comprehensive review of the master plan is under way.

“With the commencement of the terminal expansion work, we hope to mitigate the problems now being faced by passengers. On completion, we envision an advanced airport that befits the city of Bangalore, enhances its business opportunities, complements its culture and welcomes its visitors,” said GV Sanjay Reddy, managing director, BIAL on the expansion plans.

The design of the expanded terminal will sport an entirely advanced and modern elevation. The work will be completed in approximately 18 months.

The construction partners for the expansion project are Larsen & Toubro, selected through an international competitive bidding process. The enhanced terminal is aimed at significantly improving passenger experience, making access to seating, amenities and commercial facilities easier and better.
