Their happiness knows no bounds. Vijaylakshmi and Pundalik M Chandrag, hailing from a village in Belgaum, will be blessed with twins on 11.11.11, 11 years after tying the knot. Many couples who planned for a C-section delivery are opting for surgery on Friday.

“Though our scheduled date for delivery was on Thursday, we opted for a C-section a day later since this date is considered lucky,” said Vijaylakshmi.

“I was trying to conceive since 2005 and was undergoing treatment. However, an astrologer confirmed that by the end of 2011, we will have our first child. Little did we know then that our happiness would be doubled. We came to Bangalore in January and consulted at Bangalore Assisted Conception Centre (BACC). Later, I was able to conceive (through in vitro fertilisation),” she explained.

“The couple requested us to schedule the delivery on November 11, since they consider this date to be auspicious,” said BACC medical director, Dr Kamini Rao.

Another delivery has been scheduled at this centre for Friday. “Delivery on any particular date or time adds to the novelty factor. Safety of the mother and child is vital and that should not be compromised under any circumstance,” added Dr Rao.

Women scheduled for C-section surgeries a day or two before or after Friday want to deliver on Friday, said Dr Preety Prabhakar, senior gynaecologist, Apollo Hospital. The hospital will conduct five planned deliveries on Friday. Manipal Hospital has eight C-sections scheduled on Friday. The number of deliveries will increase four-fold as compared with a normal day.

Columbia Asia Hospital, Hebbal, will also conduct five scheduled deliveries on Friday, with most cases scheduled for C-section. “Within the scheduled week, patients are generally given a choice to decide on the delivery date. If they choose any particular date that they consider to be auspicious, generally, we conduct the surgery accordingly,” said Dr Vijaya Sherbet, gynaecologist, Columbia Asia Hospital.
