Divorce is the legal way of ending a marital relationship. Another way – illegal and paperless – is fast catching the city’s fancy, and it involves hiring criminals to kill the spouse.

According to the police, the city has witnessed at least 25 supari murders, where women hired contract killers to eliminate their husbands, in the last three years. Ten of these murders were reported in 2007 and 2008.

Police said this trend has caught the fancy of the upper-middle class segment, and the victims generally happen to be businessmen or realtors. Notorious rowdy-sheeters are the most sought after for these ‘assignments’, and the fee could range anywhere between Rs1 lakh and Rs10 lakh.

The trend, however, is not new to the police. According to joint commissioner of police (crime) Gopal B Hosur, cases of women hiring contract killers are an age-old trend that has come to the city from villages. “Earlier, it was the paramours who used to hire rowdy gangs to kill men.

However, now the trend is all about unfaithful wives hiring killers to eliminate their husbands. This is seen across all strata of society, especially middle-class families. We have come across many cases of businessmen being murdered by contract killers hired by their wives,” Hosur said.

A few of the contract killers operate through the Parappana Agrahara central jail, he said, adding that they accept the ‘assignment’ and put their subordinates outside on the job. Most of the communication occurs through mobile phones, despite the central jail having a jammer and ‘strict’ vigilance on the barracks.

In 2007, during a surprise check at one of the barracks of the central jail, authorities found a mobile phone and SIM card in rowdy-sheeter Tarkari Kaleel’s barrack. “After tracking his phone connection, we found out that he used to get contract assignments done from jail,’’ said a senior police officer. Hosur said, “Landlines installed in the prison should be monitored by constables, but it doesn’t seem to happen. Despite all the supposedly tight security, criminals are actively operating from the Parappana Agrahara.”

And if you thought that only men take up supari assignments, you would be unpleasantly surprised. In June 2008, three women – Rohini alias Nalini (20), Meghana alias Kavya (22) and Pallavi (25) – were arrested for allegedly murdering Anitha (37), a housewife.
