Bangalore: In an attempt to address complaints that Karnataka had been neglected by consecutive railway budgets, the Railway Budget 2009-10 unveiled by Mamata Banerjee had a clutch of proposals concerning the state, besides addressing other issues. The proposals were:
Bangalore City, Byappanahalli and Mangalore railway stations will be developed into world class stations under public-private partnership.
Bidar railway station will be developed into Adarsh (ideal) railway station with provision of basic facilities like drinking water, catering services and adequate toilets and dormitories especially for women.
Multi-functional complexes will come up on the premises of Hubli and Mysore railway stations. The complexes will have facilities for shopping, food stalls and restaurants, book stalls, PCO/ISD/STD/Fax booths, medicine and variety stores, budget hotels and underground parking.
Ambulance services will be provided for passengers at Bangalore City railway station.
Anti-Collision Devices to prevent incidents of train collisions will be made operational in South-Western Railways, head-quartered in Hubli.
A medical college will come up attached to the existing railway hospital at Mysore and will cater to children of railway staff.
Burns units to come up at the railway hospital in Bangalore.
A target of 20,000 wheels has been set up for the Rail Wheel Factory during 2009-10.
The Yeshwantpur-Yelahanka and Yelahanka-Chennasandra tracks will be doubled.
Eight new trains will be introduced to cater to rail passengers in the state. They are Bangalore-Hubli-Solapur Superfast (tri-weekly), Howrah-Bangalore superfast (weekly), Mumbai-Karwar Superfast (tri-weekly), Hazrat Nizamuddin-Bangalore Rajdhani via Kacheguda (tri-weekly), Mysore-Yeshwantpur (daily), Lucknow-Rae Bareli-Bangalore superfast (weekly), Shimoga-Bangalrore intercity express (daily),and Bangalore -Kochuveli Superfast (Weekly).
Three trains catering to state have been extended. They are 6517/6518 Bangalore-Mangalore (daily) will now run up to Kannur, 213/214 Mysore-Tirupati (daily) will run up to Chamarajanagar and Bangalore-Hubli Intercity (daily) will extend up to Dharwad.
Seven new lines have been proposed for the state between Chikkaballapur-Sri Satya Sai Prashanthi Nilayam, Almatti-Koppal; Yadgir-Shahapur-Shorapur-Muddebihal-Almatti; Gadag-Haveri; Gadag-Wadi; Shimoga-Harihar, Anekal Road-Bidadi and Nanded-Bidar.
The Guntakal-Gooty-Bangalore railway line will be electrified.
