Minister for energy and food & civil supplies, Shobha Karandlaje, on Thursday, extended support to garment factory workers’ demand for increase in wages. Addressing 1,000 garment women workers at Banappa Park, Karandlaje said the need of the hour is to continue their fight against injustice. “I am aware that garment workers are being paid meagre wages. Wages should be increased between Rs10,000 and Rs15,000,’’ she said.

Advising workers to submit memorandum to labour minister BN Bache Gowda and chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda to constitute a committee on minimum wages, she said: “I will support you irrespective of whether I will continue as minister or MLA. I will accompany you while submitting a memorandum to the chief minister and labour minister.”

Harassment
She said efforts should be made to wipe out sexual harassment at garment factories. Earlier, workers marched from Makkalakoota to Banappa Park. They demanded the government to ensure implementation of labour laws at factories.

“We want the government to constitute a committee to fix minimum wages.

We demand the government to make `300 as minimum wage per day for women working at garment factories. Most factories are not paying wages for working overtime,’’ said Jayaram KV, advisor, Garments and Textile Workers’ Union.
