A jealous husband hacked his software engineer wife’s email account and sent all her friends lewd messages to get even after a marital dispute. Thirty-five-year-old Smitha, who works in a Chennai-based software firm, had no idea what her husband was up to till one of her friends called her up and told her about the messages.
The husband, who works in the same firm, was immediately arrested and is now being questioned by the Bangalore police. Smitha’s, the police say, is not the only story. The Bangalore police’s cyber crime department has seen a steep rise in such cases and almost all victims are young women.
Many of them, police say, post their pictures and profiles on social networking websites without proper filters, which often end up in porn websites. What’s shocking is the fact that the people involved in such activities are known to the victims. According to the cyber cell, someone very close to the girl or woman is involved in 60% of the cases.
“It is only when these women and their family receive calls that they realise that their account has been hacked or someone is misusing their photographs. Such activities are done by men these girls meet in online chat rooms or through web cams. In the last two years, we have seen couples indulging in such activities for revenge after a marital dispute,’’ a senior cyber crime police officer told DNA.
The cyber cell has got over 100 such cases this year. Most complaints, the official said, came from college students and working women. Many of the accused are engineering students from Bangalore, Chennai, Kerala, Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai.
