Two children were killed and another injured when a pillar collapsed on them at Papareddy Palya on Saturday. Nagaraj, 6, and his 15-month-old sister Venkatalakshmi died in the mishap, and Thayappa, 12, was injured. The three are residents of Papareddypalya on the Outer Ring Road, near Jnanabharathi.

The police said the incident took place at 10 am while the children were playing near the pillar in front of a rented shed which served as their home. Venkatesh and Shobha are the parents of Nagaraj and Venkatalakshmi. Thayappa is Shobha’s brother. The family had moved into the shed 45 days ago from Kalasipalya.

Venkatesh is a Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) daily-wager and Shobha is a domestic help. “My wife was cooking and I was helping her in the kitchen when the incident occurred. We heard a loud sound and immediately came out. We saw our children under the pillar,” said Venkatesh.

Thayappa said he was cradling Venkatalakshmi as she was crying and when he put her down, she sat near the pillar and began playing. Nagaraj was sitting near his sister when the pillar collapsed.

“The pillar broke into three parts. The top part fell on the baby’s head. The middle part fell on Nagaraj and third fell on me. I sustained minor injuries. But they died on the spot,” added Thayappa.

The police said Thayappa is a Class 4 student at a government school in Nagarabhavi 2nd Stage and Nagaraj was a Class 1 student at the same school.

The police said that the pillar was built using bricks and cement and was not attached to the basement. The shed, owned by Shanmugam, is built on disputed property. More than a month ago, he rented out the shed to Venkatesh and his family.

The police have registered a case of unnatural deaths. The bodies were shifted to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem. They were later handed over to the parents.
