Vidyarthi Bhavan in Basavangudi has won many a heart with its delightful dosas. Now, the trademark delicacies could soon find their way to London. Sunday saw the landmark eatery receive an invitation from none other than Dr Neeraj Patil, mayor of Lambeth borough in London, to set shop in the British capital.

Patil, who hails from Karnataka, was mesmerised by the masala dosa served to him at Vidyarthi Bhavan. He even sought to know the recipe to prepare “such a wonderful dosa”.

But it was the coffee that completely bowled the mayor over. “Everywhere in London, the airport or its interior… everywhere… I am fed up of mechanised coffee. Many people in London will be yearning to have such a wonderful coffee,” said Patil, while extending his invitation to Vidyarthi Bhavan.

The mayor was full of praise for the coffee he had at the Bhavan. Patil’s remark in the guest book read: “The best coffee in Bengaluru. After coming from London, I was desperately looking for good coffee & at last I found it at Vidhyarthi (sic) Bhavan, Basavangudi, Thank you for serving me a wonderful coffee.”

He also read the note written by chief minister BS Yeddyurappa who recently visited the hotel. Patil then insisted on writing in Kannada in the guest book. He scribbled a few words in Kannada, expressing his love for his mother tongue.

Earlier, Patil was accorded a warm welcome by the staff of Vidyarthi Bhavan, who ensured the mayor had a comfortable time at the eatery.

The mayor, after his arrival, was offered a seat in the office room as the restaurant was jam-packed with customers. But Patil chose to wait for the tables to get cleared and wished to interact with customers.

Patil was the cynosure of all eyes at Vidyarthi Bhavan as the customers made a beeline to him, seeking an autograph from the dignitary.

The mayor of Lambeth, who is on a visit to the state, was accompanied by a few friends.
