The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewage Board (BWSSB) is facing shortage of tankers, even as residents are crying for water.

The board was ready to supply water within its limits, but tankers were not available.

BWSSB floated tenders three times for supply of tankers. But no one came forward. The reason: BWSSB is offering Rs1,600 a day while private tankers are demanding much more. BWSSB is struggling hard to overcome this problem and is even thinking of purchasing tankers.

S Sureshkumar, minister for BWSSB, admitted that tankers were not available in the city. “We called tenders three times, but no one came forward. To address the city’s water woes, we need at least 600 to 800 tankers. We are exploring other options to overcome this problem,” he said.“With summer around, the demand for water has increased. The demand is 1,350 mld. But we are getting only 950 mld of water. Within its limitations, BWSSB is making all efforts to address the water woes.  In old BBMP area, we have no problem. We are supplying water on alternate days there.

But we have problem in the newly-added areas. We are addressing the problem,” said the minister.

“Last year when the water problem was severe, BWSSB had dug 100 borewells within the corporation limits. Of this, 50% to 60% borewells have dried up. This year too, we wanted to dig 100 borewells. For that, we need at least Rs100 crore. The chief minister has earmarked Rs25 crore to dig borewells in the city. But this amount is not sufficient. I will meet the chief minister and request him to release more funds,” he said.

“After the legislative session ends, we will hold a meeting with MLAs and corporators to address the water woes. We will also evolve a regular mechanism to examine the issue,” he said.
