The city police have failed to collect tenants’ information as per the then police commissioner Shankar M Bidari’s directives. In view of the escalating crime and terror activities in the city, Bidari had ordered the police to collect the details of all the tenants in the city in December 2008. He had set a deadline of February, 2009 for this.

But the move proved to be an utter failure as the policemen failed to carry out the task of collecting information from the landlords. As per the order, the landlords had to inform the police about the tenants within 30 days of occupancy. The station house officers needed to transfer the data to the police commissioner’s office to maintain the records of the all tenants of the city. But, the project never took off.

A police officer said, “It is very difficult to collect the details about the tenants. All the police stations had asked for the information, but the public did not come forward with the details.”
He added that most landlords do not come forward until they face some problem from the tenants. This also applies to the paying guest accommodations. But, no one cares. Police had asked the owners to furnish the details regarding number of family members, their place of work, a photograph, their native place and a copy of the rental agreement.

Police verification neglected in pvt firms. Though the police have requested the public many times to recruit housemaids, security guards and other employees only after police verification, nobody bothers.

“We keep asking the general public and private firm owners to get police verification done but they ignore our pleas. They come to us only after their servants, housemaids, security guards, drivers commit any offences. We can solve the cases easily if we have the details,” an officer said. He added that private firms are also negligent about police verification.
