Karnataka high court on Friday reserved verdict on the petition of assembly speaker KG Bopaiah, who has been accused of swindling money allotted to build a lake in a village in Kodagu district.
On December 8, 2011, the Lokayukta police in Madikeri had filed a FIR against the speaker and three other government officials—zilla panchayat member SN Raja Rao, ZP CEO N Krishnappa and Kodagu Nirmiti Kendra project manager Yoga Narasimha. The complaint alleged that the four diverted funds allotted to build a lake in Thithimathi village in Kodagu.
Based on the directions of the district and sessions judge Ashok Nijagannanavar, who is also the judge of the special court for prevention of corruption, an FIR was filed.
Congress member Saritha Poonacha had filed the complaint on December 2 last year.
Later, Bopaiah filed a petition in the high court to quash the FIR. He and the other accused have claimed that the work for the lake was entrusted to the firm Kodagu Nirmiti Kendra and they did not have any role in the work.
