Price of fruits and vegetables may increase further in June if the transport associations go ahead with their plan of indefinite strike to protest the government’s decision of asking commercial vehicles to install speed governors.

The owners and drivers of commercial vehicles such as trucks, taxis and maxi cabs have decided to go on an indefinite strike from June 1.

GR Shanmugappa, president of All India Motor Transport Association, said more than 8.75 lakh taxis and 2.75 lakh trucks across the state would take part in the strike. He said the order regarding speed governors would be applicable on not only vehicles in the state, but also on those entering the state.

To express their disapproval of speed governors, he said, trucks, taxis and vehicles carrying vegetables would stop plying to the state from June 1. The protesters say the decision would hamper their business a great deal and thus was not welcome.

Transporters’ associations that are taking part in the strike are demanding that the state government should not insist upon installing speed governors until other states in the country implement the rule, Shanmugappa said.
