Varsities to teach nano-tech

Soon, nano-technology will be an integral part of science and engineering courses. At the fourth Bangalore Nano, higher education minister VS Acharya announced on Friday that in a year, nano-science and nano-technology would be added to the syllabi of medical, engineering and pure science courses.

“Nano-technology is the technology revolution of this century. But in order to keep up with this technology, we need to focus and incorporate nano-technology in the syllabi of various courses,” said Acharya, adding that courses like environmental science, information technology and biotechnology will also feature nano-science.

Eyes on future
The minister said that given the proven applications of nano-technology, it will emerge as an important tool in the future to tackle various problems.

“Its applications are already being put to use in biotechnology and energy. It will play a definitive role in medicine as well,” he added, giving emphasis on cancer treatments.

As for concrete plans on the proposed syllabi, Acharya admitted that it was still in nascent stage.

“Everyone should sit down and discuss this as it is in its planning stage. It would take at least a year,” he said.
