While youngsters are waiting for Valentine’s Day, the city police are waiting for a different reason — to nab drug peddlers. According to the City Crime Branch (CCB) narcotic drugs cell police, many youngsters use contraband drugs during the occasion.

According to CCB ACP R Lakshman, youngsters use contraband drugs on Valentine’s Day. “Drugs like ganja, brown sugar, cocaine are used by the youngsters — who are mostly students and employees of IT and BT companies,” Lakshman said.

He said that fortunately, the city has not reported any date rape drug cases. “Even though there are cases of contraband drugs used during such days, no date rape drug cases were found,” he said.

To keep a check on drug peddlers, the CCB has formed police teams in various places like coffee shops, pizza shops, bars, restaurants, ice-cream parlours and public parks where young people gather and party, where the drug peddlers come to sell their contraband.

The CCB officer said that it is very difficult to track the peddlers.
“Drug peddlers do not travel by flights as there is a huge security. They mostly prefer to travel by train and public buses as the risks involved are limited. Another problem in tracking them is that they communicate with the customers only through phone booths to avoid being traced.”

“Most of them have dozens of mobile numbers and constantly
change them to avoid being trapped,” said the police.

According the CCB police, the contraband drugs come to India from African countries and they are transported via Cambodia, Nepal and New Delhi.

The ganja is supplied to the customers in the city from Kolar, Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Shimoga and  Hyderabad, while the opium is smuggled from Rajasthan, Madya Pradesh and Nepal.
