The Bangalore city police are still working out the reason for the murder of 29-year-old Priyanka Gupta, a mathematics teacher at Delhi Public School on Kanakapura Road and wife of Satish Kumar Gupta, an HR manager with Infosys.

On Friday the police arrested Gupta in connection with the murder of his wife.

Bangalore police commissioner Shankar M Bidari said on Saturday that the police had got some digital evidence that would help them to ascertain the motive for the murder.

There were reports on Friday that Gupta had confessed to the police that he had killed his wife.

Bidari said Gupta, 32, had a strained marital relationship with Priyanka. Gupta had moved out of his parental home in Sudamanagar at the insistence of his wife and shifted to a house on rent in Hulimavu.

Gupta, while being grilled by the police, said he was angry with Priyanka for finding fault with his parents.

Police said Priyanka did not like Gupta supporting his parents. The Guptas had suffered reversals in their business and were seeking financial help from their son. Priyanka, it is alleged, was against providing any monetary help.

Gupta also told the police that he was just a graduate while his wife was a post-graduate. This had also been a source of friction between them.

Bidari, however, said all facts related to the murder are being verified and sounded confident of cracking the case within a week.

Gupta, who was produced in court on Friday, was remanded in police custody for eight days.

Alok Kumar, joint commissioner of police (crime), said the murder was planned. Gupta had bought a knife to kill Priyanka. Kumar said Gupta slit his wife’s throat after strangling her, and made the entire thing appear like the handiwork of an intruder.

Police said they had suspected Gupta’s involvement in the murder from the first day. They said his statements and body language on the day of the murder made them suspicious.

The police, however, are yet to get details of the cash that was allegedly stolen from the Guptas' residence in Hulimavu.
