Banglore: A police investigation is underway against Congress MLA UT Khader from Ullal, following a complaint that he forcibly took away a 45-year-old woman, Deepa Nayak, from a rehabilitation centre at Kannur in the Sampigehalli police station limits.
Besides Khader, two others, Bagalurpolice inspector Babu Anjanappa and the woman's friend, Indiranagar resident Emmanuel, are also named in the complaint.
According to a complaint filed by the woman's sister, Beena Nayak, and the head of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre, Rebeiro, the MLA and the other two men 'forcefully took away' Deepa from the facility on August 20.
The police had earlier said that Deepa became mentally-ill following her sister Shobha Nayak's death in Mumbai three years ago. Deepa underwent treatment in Mangalore before she was shifted to Kannur.
At the rehab centre, Deepa met Emmanuel's sister Swarnalatha. When the latter was discharged, Deepa asked Swarnalatha to rescue her from the centre.
Deepa later wrote a letter to Khader, seeking his help. The MLA, under the impression that the woman had been detained illegally, rushed to her aid and sent her to Emmanuel's house, ignoring the pleas of the rehab staffers.
Anjanappa told Beena the next day that her sister was under police protection. When Beena couldn't meet Deepa even after five days, she approached the DGP.
Meanwhile, Khader smelt something fishy and asked Emmanuel to send the woman to her relatives. However, the MLA was told that Deepa was sent off in a bus to Mangalore on August 24. Though Emmanuel rushed to Mangalore in search of Deepa on her relatives' demand, he failed to find her.
Inspector Anjanappa has been accused of failing to inform his senior officers about the incident.ACP B Ramachandrappa is checking if inspector Anjanappa had erred in executing his duty.
Police said Deepa was admitted to the rehab centre because she suffered from temporary memory loss.
